Book Description

She seemed far beyond his reach…could love draw them together?
For years shy animator Nathan has carried a torch for Brooke, the beautiful and dynamic Director of Development at their animation studio, even creating B-Girl, a comic-book heroine in her likeness. When a new project throws the two of them together, lovestruck Nathan finally seizes his moment – only to find Arnauld, head of the animation studio, claiming exclusive rights to Brooke’s affections.

But Nathan, it turns out, is not giving up on his dreams so easily. With inspired determination, he sets out to be the super hero of wooing his girl. Threatened by his persistence, Arnauld plays dirty – only to spark an uprising at the studio that unleashes the sort of havoc only a building full of frustrated animators can create. While Nathan pulls out all the stops to win his B-girl, Brooke has to choose. Should she pursue the sparkling career that has taken her years to build…or follow her heart?

I really did enjoy this sweet debut novel. Given that it was the later-in-life author's foray, I found it to be especially well-written.

Unfortunately, and I'm going to start off with it, there is NO EXCUSE for the 50+ errors in this book -- at one point the female lead's name is misspelled. The author even thanks editors / proofreaders and I'm left thinking "are you kidding me?" If you're going to ask us to spend money and time on your book then dammit, you need to do the same before you publish. As ePublisher Jamie LaRue said: "nothing says amateur like a misspelled word." Uh-huh. One of the author's named friends is another writer whose writing I quite like, SL Scott. And SL Scott is another author whose work is unforgivably filled with errors. These two authors are really talented so their mistakes distract and detract even further. Ugh. Their writing group needs to get organized tout de suite.

Okay, "Animate Me" has a special place for me because my name is Brooke and I grew up in Toluca Lake, so as I read and kept seeing "my" name and reading place names from my childhood it felt natsukashii. However, I am not nor ever was a fan of cartoons / comics, so after purchasing this book I kept putting off its reading, wondering if I could really enjoy a book about cartoonists.

I was wrong. The comic / cartoon references only added to the story line, (almost) never felt gratuitous and never turned me off (as I am by cartoons and comics). Of course when the author mentioned her dad a few times it was hard not to feel like "oh please, not here." But I'll let it slide (-ish) because overall she made being a part of this world such a pleasant ride.

Nathan is a socially insecure mid-twenties animator who works at an animation studio.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Sexy Perfection! May 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I just finished Animate Me! To say I loved it is a gross understatement. Loved the male POV...especially since Nathan is geeky yearning romantic perfection. *swoons* Great dialogue, very real characters, just enough drama to leave you breathless...and some very nice steamy wooing.

Now I'm left to wonder what's next for Nathan and Brooke?! More please!

3.0 out of 5 stars The Autumn Review for Animate Me June 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
There are so many things about this book that I liked. For example, I loved the animation within the book. The pictures made me smile. I also liked Nathan's brother, Curtis and his girlfriend Billie. I even liked Nathan, even though he isn't the kind of guy I typically would like. I love geeky guys. My husband is a geek. However, Nathan was a bit too insecure for my tastes. But, I did like him.

What didn't work for me was Nathan and Brooke's relationship. I just didn't really care for Brooke at all, so it was hard for me to see him fall in love with her. Their relationship seemed unbalanced to me. Don't get me wrong, I do think Brooke cared for him, but I never really felt their connection. They certainly shared some steamy scenes, which I thought were well done, but again...I just didn't feel it between them. Honestly, I kept waiting for Brooke to turn on him. I had hopes that Nathan would end up with someone like Morgan.

Overall, what I did like balanced out with what I didn't, so this was a hard book for me to review. It is unique and parts were fun and made me laugh. I think this book will appeal to a lot of readers who like the underdog getting the girl.

I had the honor and privilege to read an advanced readers copy of Animate Me the first novel by contemporary romance author Ruth Clampett.
Animate Me tells the story of Nathan Evans an animation superhero hiding in geek clothing who spends his day drawing animation for Sketch Republic and his night's drawing his comic book B girl based on his dream girl. B girl is actually based on Brooke Tobin, a woman who is not quite comfortable in her own skin, an executive at Sketch Republic whom Nathan worships from afar. Animate Me follows the unconventional relationship of Nathan and Brooke who meet accidentally outside the work place. Through the course of the novel there are many twists and turns but in the end we find that it is important to be comfortable who you are on the inside and then you will find your happiness. We are all superheroes!
The first words in the book are the definitions of the word animate - to bring to life; to give spirit and vigor. This definition captures the absolute feel of the book and the theme. Brooke and Nathan bring each other to life over the course of the book. The most amazing part of Ms. Clampett's novel is the weaving in cartoon characters and references to classic animation. I had to laugh out loud when characters were described like Wiley Coyote or Tweety or Pepe Le Pew. In addition each chapter starts with a classic quote that sets the mood for the events to come. All the comic references give the book such spirit and vigor. One of my favorite parts of the book is the use of the word "woo" and how the characters woo each other. The best wooing is when Nathan draws pictures on Starbucks cups of B-girl and gives them to Brooke. I just could not wait to coffee time each day in the story to see what Nathan drew.
