Superman cartoons disappointing in quality, August 3, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Animated World of Max & Dave Fleischer: Superman / Popeye (DVD)
This is an inexpensive set but I would not recommend it if your interest is the Superman cartoons -- the picture & sound quality are both mediocre. Far better to buy the single disk "Diamond Anniversary Edition" from Image Entertainment -- *much* better transfers. The 3rd disk, with the three color Fleischer Popeyes, is not bad but may be available more cheaply from other sources if that's all you want.

do not buy this, January 4, 2004
This review is from: The Animated World of Max & Dave Fleischer: Superman / Popeye (DVD)
I can not express how disappointed I was by this collection. I read the other reviews and thought a complete superman series, a couple of classic popeyes and rudolph digitally restored what could be better. So my wife got this for me for Christmas. What a waste
sound quality ----poor
no play all option
the worst crime is the quality of the picture-----POOR
A Fleischer brothers cartoon is a work of art and this looked like a bad copy of a copy. Washed out, dark, you miss the detail that made these cartoons classics and why they are so expense to make;I expect this from a street vendor next to the rolexx watches.
I repeat do not buy this!!!
wait for someone to do this right

A Fleischer Brother's "Greatest Hits", January 9, 2003
This review is from: The Animated World of Max & Dave Fleischer: Superman / Popeye (DVD)
Like most Fleischer DVD offerings "The Animated World of Max & Dave Fleisher: Superman / Popeye" is a mixed bag, but mostly good. It is produced by Falcon Pictures, a nostalgia themed company which restores and releases Box Sets of classic TV and film. There is obvious care put into this series.
The overall quality of the cartoons is good. Restoration has been done to the picture, which is nice and clear. A definite improvement over other DVD releases. There is a little added sound effects and audio trickery, but otherwise the original mono track seems to be preserved quite well. For many of these cartoons, this may be one of the best releases that they have seen.
The Superman series is complete, with all 17 episodes present and accounted for in chronological order. For Popeye, there are the 3 full color two-reel featurettes. These cartoons are easily the Fleischer masterpieces and it is nice to see them again. The other offerings are a smap of the Color Classics series, and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
The flaw in this release is its overall presentation. There are no features whatsoever, just the cartoons themselves. There is no "play all" option, which makes viewing a tad difficult. Aside from the Popeye and Superman cartoons, the added selections seems random. A better set would have included several black and white Popeye cartoons to compliment the two-reelers and perhaps some background information on the cartoons and the Fleischer Brothers as in a few other collections. Of course, as with most Fleischer DVD releases, duplication is also an issue, as all of these cartoons are featured on several other DVD releases. The Color Classics's are available on the superior "Somewhere in Dreamland" DVD set, and the Superman and Popeye cartoons are available on several DVDs.
Fleischer DVD releases are getting better, and "The Animated World of Max & Dave Fleisher: Superman / Popeye" is a step in the right direction.
