Book Description

A Schiffer Book for Collectors October 1996
Since the publication of Animation Art: The Early Years in the Spring of 1995, the appreciation for the accomplishments of animation artists has grown even more intense. The images strike a strong chord in us, awakening early memories and fantasies.

This new volume takes the reader from Disney's 1954 feature Lady and the Tramp up to the antics of The Simpsons. The book is illustrated with over 6500 photographs, most in color, of cels and other animation art that have been offered at auction, along with the prices they brought. In addition, thousands of other animation art auction offerings are listed, making this a comprehensive source for the collector.

Accompanying the wealth of illustrated art, the text provides historical sketches of the studios and other primary information about the artists. This is a necessary volume for all all who are interested in this wonderful art form.

1.0 out of 5 stars expensive book that ONLY COVERS ITEMS AUCTIONED, January 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Animation Art: The Later Years, 1954-1993 (A Schiffer Book for Collectors) (Hardcover)
Not a good book for the average collector. Does not go into much detail about the different kinds of art i.e. limited editions, oringal art, sketchs etc.. It does focus on background art 3 page. Animated art is a VERY EXPENSIVE hobby, this book will NOT HELP people in collecting tips. It is a COFFEE TABLE BOOK not much more. Pics are very small, almost 1/2 of book covers DISNEY art not much more for other collectors. FOR FIRST TIME COLLECTORS DONT WASTE YOUR TIME!!! For seasoned collectors, it offers NOTHING. All in all I would pass on this one!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Animation Art Lovers, August 23, 2006
This review is from: Animation Art: The Later Years, 1954-1993 (A Schiffer Book for Collectors) (Hardcover)
This is an expensive book, wether new or used. The book is several hundred pages long showing pages chock-full of animation art, the dates sold and the prices. This is not a book on the hostory of animation art, collecting, etc....it is a refrence book. The animation art is broken up by studio, Disney, Warners, etc....the images that are reproduced are small, postage stamp sized images, most of which have been taken from Sotheby's and Christies Animation art catalogs, this is an advantage and a disadvantage. If you own the catalogs from these auction galleries, you know that they are expensive and don't show all the lots, and not all images are in color. These books save you the money from buying the catalogs one by one, but the images of the art are taken from the book, meaning that if there was no photo of that lot in the catalog, it won't be in the book either, and if it was in B&W in the catalog, ditto for the book. For someone like me, a casual collector, it is a great book to see all the art that has come up for sale. For someone looking for a history of animation art, this is not the book for you.
