Editorial Reviews

Review

"Not only will this book introduce the reader to names worth knowing in independent animation, it will inspire and challenge any artist with a non-commercial streak to push their own craft further. That, in itself, makes it a recommended purchase."

There seems to be two publishers for this title. Chronicle Books are publishing it with the orange cover, and probably for distributing in USA. Thames & Hudson publishes it with a red cover and distributes it for Europe. So the price of the book will vary depending on where you buy it.

Animation Sketchbooks follows in the same format as Comics Sketchbooks: The Private Worlds of Today's Most Creative Talents and Graphic: Inside the Sketchbooks of the World's Great Graphic Designers. It features the sketchbooks of creative individuals, in this case, those who work for animation, not necessarily just artists.

50 creatives are featured and with 320 pages, it still means that the coverage for each person is quite limited. The text comes in the form of quotes plus a short profile on who they are, what they do and have created. There's not much text. The focus of the book is on showing the insides of their sketchbooks.

The sketchbook pages come in the form of sketches, collages and doodles. A lot are random musings.

It's difficult for me to understand the purpose of the book, probably as a pool of random sketchbook pages to dive into. The text doesn't talk much about animation and the sketchbook pages aren't necessarily linked to animation.

If you want to check out more work, there's a listing of websites at the back of the book.

It's introducing me to some new talent I wasn't aware of and is proving to be very inspirational. It's a tome worthy of owning and you'll go to it time and time again.

More About the Author

Laura Heit is the author of Animation Sketchbooks, a big book of drawings, lists, doodles and unpublic scratches by some of independent animations biggest names. 'It is a rare thing that you get to see inside an artist's sketchbook, so I count myself very lucky to have been able to spend the last two years combing through the wonderful, unseen pages of doodles, drawings, and pasted on bits-and-bobs that comprise the pages of animators' visual diaries. These sketchbooks are the equivalent of a sleeper's dream catcher - they are filled with an animator's (often private and personal) scribbled-down skeletons and seeds of moving images and short films.

Laura Heit is a moving image maker, and performance artist. Laura employs stop-motion, live-action puppetry, hand drawing, and computer animation in her short films. Her award winning work has screened extensively at museums and film festivals around the world including; Walker Arts center, Moma, Guggenheim, Anthology Film Archives, Millennium Film Workshop, Annecy, Rotterdam, Taiwan, Ann Arbor, and London International Film Festivals, Black Maria, PBS, and others. She also works in puppetry, experimental theater, and live performance. Her acclaimed puppet-show-in miniature, The Matchbox Shows, in which Heit plays ringmaster to a tiny cabaret, has been touring for over ten years, St. Ann's Warehouse Brooklyn, REDCAT and Walt Disney Concert Hall Los Angeles, and TBA festival Portland OR. She was co-director of the Cal Arts Experimental Animation Program form 2006-2011, and currently teaches at PNCA. She lives and works in Portland OR.
