Image of The Luyas

The Luyas went into the studio on a February morning with the plan of getting some drum sounds to start writing songs for a new album. As the mics were going up, the band received a phone call. There had been a sudden death. The incomprehensible event left the band in an existential daze. The mics put themselves up that morning.

The resulting LP, Animator, opens with "Montuno," ... Read more in Amazon's The Luyas Store

Editorial Reviews

Recorded and produced at the Treatment Room by band member and experimental brass player Pietro Amato and mixed by Jace Lasek of the Besnard Lakes at his Breakglass Studios in the band's hometown of Montreal, Animator is a cathartic sophisticated collection of songs. As melodically compelling as it is artistically rich, Animator is intuitive, seductive, moody and textural. It slowly unfolds its beauty and trusts the listener to stay with it.

When I started to play the first track for the first time, I was thinking, "Oh, this is kind of boring." But I kept listening, and as the seconds passed, my ears started going, "Wait a minute... yup, this is getting interesting...". I previewed the other tracks and decided to buy. So, then I started to play the first track ("Montuno"), and after a couple of minutes, I was saying "Holy crap. This is awesome." It takes its time and builds, but it never makes you feel impatient; just the opposite: pure listening satisfaction. Then track 2 came on ("Fifty Fifty"), and I'm thinking, "I am so glad I bought this." Tracks 3, 4, and 5 played, and I was just smiling the kind of smile that only comes from discovering new music that is better than you ever hoped it would be.

If you are looking for a pop-y, run-of-the-mill album, go elsewhere. If you are looking for beautiful soundscapes, with tracks that are sometimes haunting, sometimes euphoric, and sometimes melancholy, buy it. The instrumentation is often subtle but always wonderful. The lead singer's voice is ethereal and even a bit neotenic, but never sounds childish. Some of the tracks are long-ish for contemporary music, and every second is great.

The Luyas' "Animator" is a HUGE breath of fresh air.
