5.0 out of 5 stars punishing dark rage .... and I mean that in a good way
Dear, intense Al and his talented buddy Paul. Ministry has to be one of the most interesting, continually evolving bands of all time. Is this the same duo that put out dance pop tunes like "Everyday (Is Halloween)", then released THE seminal industrial metal albums, and finally seemed to flame out with Filth Pig and Dark Side of the Spoon? Lord awmighty, they are back...

Good angry stuff here. A fair effort on that level, but I'm beginning to agree with people who think Ministry is starting to suck. They need to mix it up a little. "Animosity", "Piss", "Broken", "The Light Pours Out of Me", "Shove", and "Stolen" are the only tracks worth listening to.

Lord awmighty, they are back with flawlessly disciplined havoc. This disc is brilliant!

Animositisomina is an instant and solid classic. I would rank it with Psalm 69 and Land of Rape and Honey, and yet it is not derivative of those great albums. All the brutal layers of sound are here, with machine gun percussion and frenzied guitars. The time signatures are demanding and riveting and, what I think really sets this work apart, the vocals are incredible. I believe I even know what Jourgensen's voice sounds like now and .... he's got a great voice!

I'd rank "Piss" and "Broken" with Ministry stalwarts "Scarecrow" and "Stigmata", and "Leper" goes on for 9 glorious minutes of lush devastation. There is not a loser in the bunch. I hate to see another human being in pain, but if Al Jourgensen's rage results in music this intense and cathartic, then I would be willing to stand in line to poke him with a stick.

Awesome. Passionate. Pulverizing. Overwhelming. Irresistible. Jourgensen and Barker are at the top of their game, and I am so thankful. So very very thankful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another long time Ministry fan loves this CD, March 24, 2003

I wrote a review for this CD a few weeks ago that never got posted. I'm glad it didn't, because I originally gave this CD 4 stars. Now that I've had a few more weeks to listen to it, I can definitely give it 5!

I hated most of Ministry's previous studio album, "Dark Side of the Spoon". I thought it was a very weak, uninspired, and badly produced CD. "Animositisomina" is the exact opposite; it's a very strong, inspired, and well produced album. This sounds like a Ministry album. The first four songs hit the listener like a sledge hammer. On track five, "Broken", Al and Paul bring in some of their RevCo/Buck Satan sound. "Light" is a fantastic cover, along the lines of "Lay, Lady, Lay" on FlithPig. Shove reminds me of one of their Lard tracks (this isn't a bad thing). They top off the disc by ending with one of their wonderful instrumentals along the lines of the last tracks on "Land", "Mind", and "Psalm".

This disc didn't grab my attention at first. Much like "Filth Pig", it took some listening for me to hear the direction that the band was going. Even though I didn't like "Filth Pig" at first because it was a straight ahead heavy rock album (Ministry's reaction to the "industrial" label placed on them), it eventually became one of my favorite CDs. "Animositisomina" did not take as long for me to get into. It is an album takes the feelings of all of Ministry's previous efforts, and puts them in a blender. This CD stands out from a lot of the other heavy music out there right now because it is, indeed, actually heavy; and, more important, it is creative.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ministry. Ministry. Ministry., February 27, 2005
This review is from: Animositisomina (Audio CD)
I really believe that this is up there with their earlier work. This is definitely hypnotic. But not in the way of bands such as Sunn 0))) or 0-l even..This is a different type of Hypnotic. Repetitive in a small way, but if you are already a fan of Ministry, i doubt you could hate this record.

This album starts off with a crushing riff, and it just gets better and better. Animosity, Unsung, Piss, The Light Pours Out of Me (Especially "hypnotic" when the drumming hardly changes a beat), Shove, Stolen and Leper are my personal favourites on this album.

The whole album is very loud. Just like their newest album, Houses of the Mole, is loud too. And it being loud is a good thing, obviously. Ministry are very influential, and combine crushing riffs that sometimes repeat themselves over and over again, with eerie, sometimes shouty, vocals..All in all, look no further than this band for THE definition of Industrial Metal.

This album should not be overlooked for any reason. It is easily up there, like i said, with their earlier work..And every fan must, and probably does by now, own this. The final song Leper, is just an example of what i mean by hypnotic..As it goes for 9:05 mins. And the ending riff, that goes for just about 5 mins, will stay in your head for a long time after you hear it. This album deserves respect. 5/5

4.0 out of 5 stars Animosity, July 2, 2003

I must admit that I am more of a casual Ministry fan. My first exposure to the legendary industrial band was "Psalm 69" when I was still in high school. That was the most intense, aggresive album I had ever heard at the time. Ministry was definitely my first exposure to industrial music. Little did I know that years later, it would become my personal favorite genre of music. Since high school, my tastes in music has evolved. Now I am back to listening to industrial music full time. A few weeks back, I found a used copy of the band's new cd "Animositisomina". I bought it because I have been hearing nothing but good things about the album. My initial response to the cd was not a good response. I didn't like what I heard. I set aside for awhile. When I recently brought it into the office and put it into my computer, I found myself falling in love with the nihilistic lyrics and abrasive industrial beats. The entire album reminded me of "Psalm 69". "Animosity" especially reminded me of "Jesus Built My Hotrod". Although "Animositisomina" isn't the easiest album to listen to, the music itself certainly is conducive to those who enjoy this type of music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great comeback album, February 24, 2003

I have been a ministry fan since '88. So my sense of what a good Ministry album has always leaned toward Land of Rape.. and The Mind.., but I have to say that this is an amazing album, especially considering that it comes from a band with so much history. Dark side was an abomination, save a few tracks, so for them to come back with an album that goes back to their roots and still plows new territory is amazing. Vocal harmonies from Ministry? Never thought I would see the day but I find myself searching out those songs on this disk more than their standard grindcore numbers.
If you are a long time fan, this disk will take a few listens (as with any band that you might have a long history with). But the more you listen, the more you will love this album.

Ministry has done it again. They've made their 1st studio release on the sanctuary label a virtual assault on today's
mock-metal. Animositisomina will take you on a trip from El Paso to the moon, and it takes no prisoners. If you're familiar with Ministry's use of technology, humor and kick-... originality , you won't be dissapointed. Crank this CD, throw it in drive, and floor it. And keep you eyes peeled for Ministry's Fornica Tour 2003 in a city near you. I say you buy 2 copies. One for you and one for your skank ex-girlfriend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Saw it Live, Buy it Now, and GO to the show!, April 11, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Animositisomina (Audio CD)
I read all the reviews on this page, and enjoyed them all. Many valid points brought up about how truly excellent this album is. So excellent in fact, that I decided to write my first ever Amazon review. I'm not going to repeat what was said before me, but I liked the comments comparing "Shove" to Joy Division, and about how this should have been the follow-up to "Psalm 69". If this WERE the follow-up to Psalm, I think the musical landscape would have been a little different. I thought FilthPig was great, but this...

They had me with the opening track. And it gets better every time I play it.

And if you thought Ministry lost it because of some previous output (and there were some gems in there) this album is here to tell you that they have not lost anything. I saw the concert a couple of weeks ago in Phoenix, and it just blew me away. Reminded me of the Lolapalooza tour, and the hey-day that was "Psalm 69". Great sound and visuals. I took a beating to make sure I could get up the front of the stage - something that I don't do much anymore at age 32. It was worth the boot to the head. It was worth the scar on my leg. I brought a couple of Ministry "virgins" to see the show. The BOTH described it as a "Religious Experience".

Oh yeah. The political thing. With MTV and ClearChannel "concerned" about content depicting police brutality, imagery of war, or lyrics bordering on dissent, you're not likely to hear or see anything from Ministry. Too bad. Someone else pointed out the timing of this album and "Gulf War II: The Reckoning", and Psalm 69's release alongside "Gulf I: Desert Storm". Riiiight...
Who can forget the George Bush parody in the "N.W.O." song/video. I doubt they're playing that anymore. Well... Maybe in France.

My advice: Grab this album and their video collection "The Tapes of Wrath". And if they are playing in a town near you, GO.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Industrial Legends Return With A Great CD!, April 10, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Animositisomina (Audio CD)
I have been a fan of these guys since I bought their cd "Twitch" when I was 16. I have to say this is their best cd since "Psalm 69." I actually got to see Ministry on the "Psalm 69" tour with them, Stone Temple Pilots and Sepultura in New Orleans. Ministry put on one a hell of a show. I would encourage anybody who hasn't since Ministry live to do so.

After making a 180 degree turn on "Filth Pig" and "Dark Side of the Spoon," Ministry return to their roots with "Animositisomina." This is a very heavy industrial cd with loud guitars and distorted vocals, just what you would expect from Ministry. They are the Fathers of Industrial Music. They have influenced many artists such as Nine Inch Nails, Filter, Static-X, Marilyn Manson, Fear Factory, etc.

Some of the tracks that stand out are Animosity, Unsung, Piss, Shove, and Stolen. Actually all of the tracks are good. Long time Ministry fans won't be disappointed. I would recommend this cd to Ministry fans and to those who are new to this group.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just a good album. Nothing more., February 12, 2004
This review is from: Animositisomina (Audio CD)
While I had some hopes for a glorious comeback, after listening to this album several dozen times it's clear to me, that Al and Paul have lost it. Their peak of creativity is long behind them, ending somewhere between "Psalm 69" and "Filth Pig". The music here is sometimes excellent, sometimes worse, good on average, but it doesn't excite. This record can't compare to the act of rebellion like "The Mind..." was, or to the absolute perfection of "Psalm 69". It's just 50+ minutes of good industrial-metal.

The biggest drawback here is that almost all the songs are cliche-driven. Ministry stuck to the cliche? Could you think of it 10 years ago? While the cliche itself is not bad, still it shows, since the creative side suffered. Another gripe about the album is it's distortion settings. It makes the drums fall too much in the background, and the guitars sound too fuzzy. All in all, it results in slower songs often sounding like machinery humming. This, as you might guess, is not the most entertaining thing.

Still, there are tracks that almost make it. It's the title "Animosity", which is the closest thing to perfection and variety here. A 5/5 number. Then, there's angst-driven "Piss" which is also a personal and authentic song. "Broken" and "The Light Pours..." are OK tracks. And "Shove" and "Impossible" are another strong songs. All the rest, I'm sorry to say, is inferior to Ministry's golden era albums.

And one more gripe: alright guys, where're all the samples? Ministry used to be gods of sampler-mastery, unrivaled by all but one or two bands. All that is forgotten.

Well, this is not the comeback I was hoping for, and while I'll still buy future Ministry albums (if there were some), I'm not sweating about it any more.

5.0 out of 5 stars MINISTRY LIVES!, August 31, 2003
This review is from: Animositisomina (Audio CD)
The world at large may have forgotten, dismissed or never have known about Ministry as year after year these pioneers were cloned in various ways from pop to rock and then some but I as well as many other die hard fans have not.

This new release is not so much a return to form as it is a band in the throes of overcoming-period.
I love every inch of Ministry good and bad and have not stopped buying their cd's and never will as long as they continue to make theyre own music theyre way.

Bands with this kind of work ethic and creative stamina are just non-exsistent in this day and age.
Right on!Bring on another decade of Ministry!!!
