Book Description

January 1, 2003
Anise Hunt lives in a world moments from our own -- a world that has suffered an eternity of anguish. It is a world where a terrible virus has corrupted humanity's genes, bringing a slow and agonizing death to the young as their parents watch in agony. But not everyone has become infected with the virus, and those who are free from it live in another world entirely -- a world of prosperity and ease. Anise's genes are normal. Orson Denvers, a rich young man with impeccable genes, is set to usher Anise into a loveless marriage -- until the night she runs away. And where can she run? Only one place: into the ghetto of the genetic degenerates.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In Henry's dazzling debut novel on the search for love, 17-year-old Anise Hunt is left to cope with her grief-stricken father. First her half-sister is killed by a virus that over several generations has wreaked havoc with humanity's genes, and then her mother dies under mysterious circumstances. Her father urges Anise to marry a well-to-do Harvard student with impeccable genes, but instead she seeks refuge in the ghetto inhabited by "degens," as the genetically degenerate are known. While the influence of Pride and Prejudice is clear throughout, the dark, brutal and twisted forms of love the characters exhibit are more reminiscent of those in Wuthering Heights. The prose flows easily through an enthralling plot, marred only by a couple of girlishly idiotic actions.

Full of interesting twists, Anise is definitely worth the read. Follow the story of a rich girl who gave up everything in her quest for love. She finds out that life isn't always served on a silver platter. I found the book enjoyable, yet some of the characters completely shift their personalities so it's hard to understand who they really are (Tom, Orson, and Rachel). At times, they seem to be best friends to Anise, and then the next moment they appear to be the enemy. In addition, what happens between Mr. Denver's and Anise makes it a bit hard to swallow the ending. Read it and see if I'm wrong. Henry is creative, and full of surprises.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good Sunday read, November 25, 2003

I'm a devoted fan of Sheri S. Tepper and noticed hints of similar brilliance in Maren Henry's debut novel. I read it in a quick 2 1/2 hours or so--I was completely absorbed by her tale. However, as others have noted, there are some weird character changes that don't jive. These unrealistic character shifts interrupt the flow of an otherwise golden book.

If you enjoy futuristic, "what-would-happen-if" sorts of tales, this book will be perfect for you.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a load of tripe, October 6, 2009
This review is from: Anise (Hardcover)
I'm shocked this book was published. Poorly plotted, poorly written, poorly edited. Well, you get the idea. Henry has one cool idea - a future in which a virus has caused some humans to suffer a wasting, terminal illness (familiar?), but not others - and turns it into a weird, semi-literate romance novel. It has crazy anti-feminist overtones, too, while purporting to be the tale of a spirited young woman.

Ack. Don't buy this book. If you must read it (and I did, just to see if it ever got any better), borrow a copy from the library.
