Anita Bryant (former beauty queen and singer, spokeswoman for the Florida Citrus Commission, and popular Christian author of books such as Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory, Amazing Grace, and Bless this house) pretty much destroyed her career with her campaign in the 1970s against "militant homosexuality" through her organization "Save Our Children." She ultimately suffered a divorce, sought counseling, and declared bankruptcy after later trying to resurrect her career. She also wrote a book, A New Day: A Triumphant Story of Forgiveness, Healing, and Recovery, in which she told how it was easier for her to forgive the gays who had protested against her and ruined her career, than for her to forgive some of the Christians and pastors who treated her "judgmentally," ruined her marriage, and caused her to go into counseling.

This 1977 book was written right at the beginning of her campaign, and details how she became involved in the issue ("The thought of known homosexuals teaching my children especially in a religious school bothered me"), and ends after the "victory" in Miami, when the Dade County ordinance that prohibited discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation was repealed by a margin of 69% to 31%.

The book contains some of her famous/infamous slogans, such as "Homosexuals cannot reproduce---so they must recruit. And to freshen their ranks, they must recruit the youth of America," and "homosexuals have taken a perfectly good word ("gay") and twisted and perverted it."

For someone digging into the history of this whole affair, this book will be interesting reading.

Anita Bryant gives a vivid account of her struggle in the 70's. She clearly presents her worldview, and the lessons she learned as she worked to protect her kids and others' children from militant homosexuals. I found her book to be full of solid answers about a meaningful Christian reponse to "alternative lifestyles." One of her statements that I have found to be especially true is this: "Homosexuality is a spiritual problem."
