Spain released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada: LANGUAGES: Spanish ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), English ( Subtitles ), French ( Subtitles ), Spanish ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN (1.85:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Biographies, Filmographies, Interactive Menu, Making Of, Posters, Scene Access, Trailer(s), SYNOPSIS: Anita has worked at a cinema box-office for the past thirty years; now she is forced to watch that whole era being wiped out, literally, as her old cinema house is pulled down to make way for a modern multiplex. Anita herself is obliged to take early retirement because she doesn't suit the new company's image. Unable to get over the shock of it all, Anita finds herself being drawn back to her old workplace on a daily basis, although all that's left is a building site being put up by a construction firm. By chance, Anita falls in love with one of the workers on the site who drives a bulldozer. A tender affair develops between these two, and though Anita's paramour is married, nevertheless their clandestine love helps both of them raise their hopes for a better future. For Anita, it at least helps her to make a break with the past. Now at last she can begin to believe that there is indeed a life after her old existence.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ventura Pons goes romantic... sort of, August 23, 2008

This review is from: Anita no perd el tren (aka Anita Takes a Chance) (DVD)
The wonderful Rosa Maria Sardà plays the title role in this charming, wistful, often whimsical comedy/drama directed by Ventura Pons.

Anita, a fifty-year-old film buff who has led a predictable and unadventurous life as a box-office clerk, takes a chance on love when she's pursued by a hunky construction worker. It's not your typical romantic comedy, but it's a lovely film.

Set in Barcelona, the film was shot in a mix of Spanish and Catalan (mostly Catalan), though it's often shown in Spanish-dubbed versions. The European Spanish dub (available on this DVD) is much more carefully done than the American Spanish dub shown recently on Univisión television.

This disc also includes the original Catalan/Spanish multilingual version, which I recommend (and which you can watch with the Spanish or English subtitles turned on if you need them). It gives a good feel for the reality of conversations in that part of Spain.

"Anita" is my favorite Ventura Pons film (as the director usually goes in for much more depressing scripts). Apparently it's the only one of his films that's unavailable in the U.S.
