5.0 out of 5 stars Exotic, Soothing, Entrancing, June 14, 2000
By

This review is from: Anjani (Audio CD)
I have been eagerly awaiting a solo CD by Anjani ever since I first heard her vocals with Freddie Ravel. "Jasmine Breeze" and "I Need You" from Midnight Passion will always be two of my favorites. This album surpasses my high expectations. I am particularly drawn by her versatility. Her unique style combines soft jazz rhythms, Hawaiian melodies, and Asian progressions. Anjani is clearly a gifted song writer and musician who is able to express her passion in her songs with a flare that is clearly a product of her exotic heritage and upbringing. My favorite songs from this CD are "Here and Now", "Kanaloa", "Queen of Your Heart", "Ties That Bind", "Over You", and "The Spirit Of Love".

5.0 out of 5 stars Flowing in the spirit of Love, July 10, 2000
By
Sandra Arrowood (Makawao, Hawai'i) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Anjani (Audio CD)
Anjani's CD takes me into the unique realm of the sophisticated Island lady, with an articulate, heartfelt voice offering an unselfconsciously exotic array of Hawaiian, Okinawan, and even intriguingly otherworldly ("Angel by Your Side") songs. The tunes and lyrics run through my mind through the day, richly swirling with yearning, romance, the delicately empty-full moment when one chooses rising above and moving beyond heartbreak, the playfulness of accepting where one is and the delighted certainty that love is near the horizon and flowing towards us around the bend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soft and Sexy, June 15, 2000

Soft, sexy, smooth, sultry -- Anjani's mellow voice and light jazzy instrumentals combine to make this debut cd a highly pleasant listening experience. Anjani Thomas's extensive musical experience is evident in the seasoned and mature tracks this beautiful Hawaiian singer/songwriter/performer offers us. I'd recommend the album without pause, and wish both Anjani and the record much success. If she makes a New Jersey/New York promotional tour, I'll be first in line for tickets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly engaging, June 13, 2000
This review is from: Anjani (Audio CD)
Refreshingly engaging, thoughtful lyrics are a definite dimension above the current crop of bland pop tunes. The melodies are wonderful. Anjani sings with generous portions of honesty, richness and love, and with a special quality of almost a whisper as an echo. It's a stretch to describe music by comparison, but try Vanessa Williams' "The Sweetest Days" voice, with a touch more passion like an Ella Fitzgerald, singing original ballads in the style of the soft jazz standards; that might be in the ballpark. The first time I played the CD, I intended it as background while I was on the computer. Over 50 minutes later, I hadn't pressed a single key. I had just dissolved into the music. "How I Love You" was so tender, I felt like I was being caressed. Especially touching was a song done in Hawaiian entitled, Kanaloa." "Spirit of Love," had an intriguing oriental world beat, and fairy tale quality. Songs of love and living in the wonderful mystery that life is. Instantly one of my top 10.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sacred place, September 18, 2000
By
This review is from: Anjani (Audio CD)
Every time I listen to this CD I am thankful that Anjani decided to share her talents with us. She has the ability to take me to another place. To me the place is a natural, sacred location. A place not easy to get to this day and age. A place that, if you are there, and perform the right rituals, you know you will be relaxed, happy, and fulfilled for the present, the future, and beyond. I am sad that Anjani has been hiding from us for so long but am overjoyed that we now can experience her range of talents with this CD. If everyone were to listen to Anjani's CD I think the world would be a better place.

Anajani's voice on this album is both enchanting and angelic. Her voice has an exceptional range. She can have a sultry jazz sound and then follow with a Hawaiian traditional. I was surprised and delighted by the variety and themes of her artistry. This is very relaxing music. Perfect with a glass of wine!

5.0 out of 5 stars Angelic, Stylish, Versatile, June 12, 2000
By
This review is from: Anjani (Audio CD)
This album came along at the right moment for me. Anjani's melifluous voice carries you through a range of emotions using the most appropriate similies and metaphors. In "Kanaloa" she memorializes George Helm and Kimo Mitchell who struggled to save the Hawaiian Island of Kahoolawe from destruction by the military. Her Hawaiian vocals are strong, haunting, and the lyrics thought provoking. "The Spirit of Love" is a child-like surprise, coupling a simple love song with a uniquely foreign (Okinawan)melody. My all out favorite...for this moment anyway... is "Over You." What a great torch song! Wow. Dinner for one at a table for two! Powerful!

I highly recommend this CD. Can't wait to hear her play in person some day!

5.0 out of 5 stars Now & Then, June 24, 2000
This review is from: Anjani (Audio CD)
Art is often reflective the times we live in and some reflects that era better than others.

I was impressed by the contemporary yet timeless nature of the music on this first but stunning CD by emerging artist Anjani. In it was the grandeur of intelliegent musicanship that merged with both contemporary and timeless concepts.Anjani seems to have addressed with musical beauty, great tempos and meldoies, what we have always felt as human beings about love, relationships, spirituality along with a contemporary spin.I found myself tingling with joy and awe more than once when listening to this sensitive work of artistry.

Anjani has captured it all in what I believe is one of the best contemporary works I heard in a very long time. She promises to be the risng star on the horizon whom speaks for us all in this dymnamic but challenging time. While her questions relate to what most of us feel at some time or other her gentle,Hawaiin style messages of love and faith bring us back to the timeless that we are all a part of.Practical,sensual,loving.These are the earmarks that make this CD one of my favorite in a long time. -Scott Corey
