Editorial Reviews

2010 two CD collection, the second volume of this series from Above & Beyond's Anjunabeats label. Mixed by Jaytech and label boss, James Grant, Anjunadeep 02, is the eagerly awaited follow-up to 2009's first volume. They've each taken a CD for this instalment, bringing together the label's hottest artists, with numerous exclusive tracks and remixes across both discs. Anjunadeep 02 profiles the label's recent glories and future anthems: uplifting but never saccharine, and always underpinned with a solid groove, both discs define a new melodic style that lies somewhere between House, Techno, and Trance. 28 tracks including cuts from Jaytech, Jamie Matrix, Hydroform, Solarity and many others.

While it's essential listening for 2010, and still head and shoulders above any other dance music imprints out there at the moment, fans of Anjunadeep 01 may, on first hearing, feel that it doesn't seem as cleverly-constructed, thought-provoking, dark and - well - DEEP as the first instalment, mixed by Anjuna maestros Above & Beyond.

I'm not sure how James Grant and Jaytech divided up the track listing, but the end result is that the first disc is beat-driven, urgent, relentless AND meandering at the same time, if that's possible. If anything, it's too full-on, and while the individual tracks certainly wear the "progressive" tag, perhaps the mix doesn't, and comes across as a bit too crowd-pleasing (if that's ever a bad thing outside of Ministry's cheesier moments). In the podcast promo for this CD on YouTube, Grant describes 16-bit Lolitas' Re-Murdered as "pitch black and menacing". In the context of this mix, maybe it is, but in a general sense, you may beg to differ, and want more. But SOLARITY, especially, and Jamie Matrix (Mr and Mrs Matrix must be so proud of their boy ;o) rock it out, and the Hernan Cerbello track is an unexpected selection - nice enough, while being a bit Hed Kandi-ish(!) One pleasant surprise is that Grant and Jaytech manage to make BT's Flaming June sound absolutely right in an Anjunadeep compilation - not a nostalgic throwback - something I wasn't expecting.

But for my money, the main stand-out tracks are on Jaytech's second disc, the first half of which is insistent yet hypnotic, while the second half a breathtaking selection of stunners - but then, a lot of that is down to the mixing.

I have to say Above & Beyond used alot of the tracks in Vol. 1 that had it's hits and misses (understandably because the Anjunadeep series was still in it's experimental stage), but Jaytech & James Grant picked-up the slack nicely here and set the standard in concrete. Both discs are very enjoyable to listen to straight through over and over again. And adding Boom Jinx & Andrew Bayer - By All Means and To The Six (Martin Roth Remix) are the icing on the cake. Great job guys! Can't wait for Vol. 3!
