The Anker USB 3.0 to SATA Converter Adapter is working fine and I am currently using it to connect a 2.5 inch SSD as an external backup drive.

So if you need to clone a drive before installing it, this should work very well.

Item was ordered 11/10, shipped 11/11, and arrived 11/14. As usual, kudos to Amazon.com for handling the order in such an expeditious manner.

The adapter was working fine for a few weeks. It was not advertised as being "hot-pluggable" so I was always careful to eject the unit from the USB port and unplug the power cord before connecting or disconnecting a hard drive to the adapter. Everything worked fine until this morning, when my desktop PC would no longer recognize the adapter. Likewise when I connected it to both of my laptops. The adapter was well and truly D-E-A-D.

Looks like I'll be contacting LaptopMate to see if their warranty is as good as they claim it to be. In the meantime, I'm giving this product a one-star rating and might update it in the future, depending on how LaptopMate handles the warranty claim.

*** UPDATE 12/13/12 ***

I was contacted by a representative from LaptopMate who apologized for the problem and sent me a replacement unit via express mail without requiring me to return the faulty one. The replacement unit arrived earlier this week and seems to be working fine. I am extremely impressed with the level of customer service and the speed with which they handled the warranty claim. I am amending my rating of the product to five stars.

Have had this adapter for a week now and have repaired 4 harddrives and transferred my DVR recordings from the DVR SATA drive to my computer as well as used a variety of hard drive as external drives. This thing is really something else. I have used it with very old SATA Drives, very new SATA drives on laptops and desktops with USB 1, 2 and 3. The Uspeed USB 3.0 to SATA adapter is a superb product and I would say from my experience is a better interface than is included in many computers.

I needed this because I had a number of issues with several SATA hard drives and the other adapters I had gotten did not work as well as expected. I choose the USpeed adapter because it looked well made enought to last a while and was fully compatible with previous versions of USB, SATA and older Operating Systems, there were no warnings about incompatibilities. The adapter arrived quicker than expected and I have to admit I immediatly openned the packaging, did not read the instructions, and saw what I call 'built forever' quality, strong well built case, robust cable and an excellent wall power adapter. I felt good about my choice.

Then I connected the adapter to a seemingly impossible to format Seagate 7200.11 1000 Gigabyte drive that had been inside a Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus and to a Dell e520 desktop. Again I have to admit I did not read the instructions, but I did use the normal USB drive precautions of connecting the included wall power adapter before I connected the very robust USB cable. In a few seconds Windows 7 had installed the software and I tried to access the drive. This time the drive appeared in My computer and a message asking me to format the drive appeared.

This is a very useful device. It's inexpensive and has blazing fast speeds with just a couple of minor issues that keep it from being great. First, the USB connector to the hard drive does not lock in place, so it's easy to pull out slightly when you're moving the hard drive or plugging in the power cable (there is no off switch). This is more a nuisance than anything else, but it seems like something that should be easy to fix at almost no cost. Also the provided USB 3 cable is very short, so you can't move the device very far from the USB port on your computer. Again, more annoying than anything else. I tried a longer USB 3 cable I've been using successfully with other external hard drives, but the Anker reverted to USB 2 speeds. Still, I highly recommend this device to anyone who needs to copy their internal drive to a newer drive, or needs to troubleshoot a drive. I'm not sure I'd want to use it as a permanent external drive for the reasons above. BTW it worked fine with a 4TB HGST drive.

Benchmarking with CrystalDiskMark and various high end SSD drives on an Intel usb3 controller this device gives me 280MBs (2240mbits) sequential read/write throughput. The same SSD drives on usb2 run at 30MBs (240mbs) abysmal... Even though these SSDs can do 450MBs on SATA3 controllers, this is a significant gain for usb bandwidth. Actual disk to disk transfer rates will depend on the slowest of the two drives being used, but now any standard 2.5" or 3.5" hard drive won't be crippled by the interface allowing them to work at their full speed potential, generally 50-130MBs.

Users should have realistic expectations from this device, although usb3 specs are stated to be 5gbs/5000mbs/625MBs in reality it's more like 300MBs, and more importantly the average 2.5" drive has an average throughput of ~70MBs. So your transfer rates won't magically be 10 times faster going to usb3 despite what any of the marketing says on the boxes of external hard drives.

My largest backups (160GB) from a WD Velociraptor 1TB to a WD Scorpio Black 750 are now 3-4 times faster since switching from usb 2 to 3 with this adaptor. It's a great piece of equipment for any geek to have, and being able to power 3.5" drives makes it incredibly versatile. I highly recommend it.
