Book Description

September 30, 2002
Ann Arbor began the 20th century as a modest manufacturing and farm trading center with a small co-existing university community. By the end of the century, Ann Arbor had developed into a cosmopolitan city, home to people from all over the world. Ann Arbor in the 20th Century details the important developments that occurred over a period of 100 years, as residents witnessed the growth of its neighborhoods, schools, shopping areas, and social services. Enormous changes to the physical landscape of the town-brought about by innovations in architecture, the influence of industry and entertainment, and the transition from horse-drawn vehicles to automobiles-are all documented through this collection of photographs. Images of famous visitors, such as Carrie Nation railing against alcohol and President Kennedy introducing the Peace Corps, are included.

This review is from: Ann Arbor in the 20th Century: A Photographic History (MI) (Images of America) (Paperback)
For those of us who grew up in the special city of Ann Arbor during the 20th century, or for those who came to school there and also fell in love with the city, this book is a treasure. Ann Arbor does better than most cities embracing its past, but many of the landmark structures of my youth no longer exist except in memory or in the photos contained in this book. Some things are still there, but are now quite different. (Washtenaw Dairy's ice cream counter, for instance.) The stories contained here along with the photos perfectly capture the charm and tonality of my remarkable hometown. Even those with whom I've shared the book with who personally have only a fleeting familiarity with A2, are taken with the presentation of the city's past. Buy it. Give it. It makes a wonderful and much appreciated gift.

By the beginning of the 20th century, Ann Arbor's Main Street was clearly the region's center of trade, with rows of brick buildings, brick paying (installed in 1898), and even a skyscraper, the seven-story Glazier Building (just beyond the trolley). Read the first page
