5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Bach collection, March 3, 2005
By
This review is from: Anna Magdalena's Notebook (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful album for those who like light harpsichord with some interspersed vocals. It contains some of Bach's best and most pleasing harpsichord compositions, along with a good selection from the Clavierbüchlein für Anna Magdalena. Lorraine Hunt is fabulous, particularly shining on "Willst du mein Herz mir schenken" and truly stirring on "Ich habe genug". Recommended for anyone with a soul!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fitting Time for a Perfect Recorded Memory, July 11, 2006
By
This review is from: Anna Magdalena's Notebook (Audio CD)
For those who continue to listen to the recorded memories of the very sadly and recently lost Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, this recording is about as perfect as any recorded to remember the inordinately intelligent, beautiful, compassionate and eloquent connection between Hunt Lieberson and Bach. Nicholas McGegan is the epitome of Bach interpreters and has selected a program that is one of the more sensitive and enriching on record.

The recital begins appropriately with the First French Suite BWV 812, proceeds with Hunt Lieberson's flawless 'Bist du bei mir' BWV 508 and 'Willst du dein Herz mir schenken' BWV 518 before opening the understated majesty of the 'Notebooks for Anna Magdalena'. As pause for the pensive, McGegan inserts 'Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten' BWV 691, excerpts from 'Goldberg Variations' and then lauches into the highlight of the performance, Bach's Cantata No. 82 'Ich habe genug' and 'Ich habe genug', BWV 82 - a work which Hunt Lieberson now owns.

Yet the recital doesn't end here (though emotionally some would say that it should) but continues with 'Gedenke doch, mein Geist', BWV 509 and proceeds to the Second French Suite before returning to the 'Anna Magdalena Notebooks', and ends with several fine works for keyboard alone.

The degree of collaboration among Hunt Lieberson, McGegan and David Bowles is stunning, especially knowing there will be no further recordings such as this. Among all the many fine recordings left to us that captured Lorraine Hunt Lieberson's amazing gifts and humanity, this recording is very close to the center of her mission in musical life. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, July 06
