EXCLUSIVE - "Thieves (Live In Studio)"

Biography

Success is a devilish opiate. A swift and heady drink that goes down smooth at first, and then starts to burn your throat and rattle your bones. Only to leave crater sized holes in your constitution the next day. We all love a good success story, don't we? But interestingly, what usually makes it 'good' are not the 'good' things about the story. No. It's the bad things that perk our ears up. It's… Read more in Amazon's Incubus Store

5.0 out of 5 stars It's time we met and made a mess, January 10, 2007

Alright, well...after that near perfect, detailed, review below mine, there's not much left to say. Anna Molly is just an upbeat rocker that seems to be the kind of track you either love or hate. I fall in to the love portion and I'm sure you would too if you saw Incubus perform it live. Other than that, you do actually get to hear it live, and in normal Incubus form, they pour a ton of energy into it. As seems to be customary anymore, you also get another version of Drive. As much as I like the song, it's seriously starting to grate the nerves. The overhaul they did on it in 2004 was genius and reminded me as to why I liked it in the first place but I don't know, I'd rather have the version of Pardon Me they did on ESPN's ESPY awards personally (I know that was a long time ago but man, love that version!). Then you have the beautiful acoustic rendition of Love Hurts from their newest offering, Light Grenades. Incubus always puts out terrific acoustic tracks and this is no different. Brandon's voice is painfully amazing and Mike's guitar work is great as well.

I'm not gonna say that everyone should own this single. It's clear that the only people who rush out to buy Incubus singles are the die-hard fans and they already know, even before hearing it, that it's definitely worth the money. But for casual fans I'm not sure. The acoustic version of Love Hurts proves to be worth the price of admission alone, so I suppose if you feel like throwing down a chunk of change for this single, you most likely won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect introduction to Light Grenades., December 11, 2006

This review is from: Anna-Molly (Audio CD)
Although there was a long wait for this single (I originally ordered it in early November, and just received it), I am very pleased. Anybody who's a fan of Incubus's new album, Light Grenades, will instantly fall in love with every track that's on here. Or if you're simply interested in hearing how Incubus sounds these days, this is a good place to start. You should all be familiar with the first track by now. Anna Molly is not only upbeat and catchy, but it exudes singer Brandon Boyd's typical intelligent lyricism. The song is a commentary on appreciating and learning to love a person for who they are, instead of holding out for an ideal person you've created in your mind's eye. Cleverly, he sings the lyrics as "anomaly," as the person may or may not exist in real life.

The remaining tracks aren't available on any other release. The live tracks were recorded at this year's Edgefest - a festival that took place in Tempe, AZ during the month of September. Per usual, the band demonstrates their impressive live abilities and energy during the song Anna Molly. The next song, Drive, is perhaps the most well known Incubus song. It has undergone several makeovers over the past couple of years, most recently including MUCH more distortion on the part of guitarist Mike Einziger. The rougher guitar portions of this song are a welcome change to this overplayed, albeit good, song.

The last track makes this single worth every penny. The album version of Love Hurts is impressive to say the least. But in typical Incubus style, stripping the song down to its core elements of guitar and vocals makes it all the better. It is an incredible exhibition of Boyd's talents as a singer and poet. They manage to take an obviously cliche topic and keep it interesting. I encourage any Incubus fan to pick this up (or download it... whatever). And if you haven't checked out Light Grenades yet, I suggest you do that ASAP.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the best song..., December 16, 2006
This review is from: Anna-Molly (Audio CD)
An average song on an amazing album. And what the heck is up with the heinous album artwork????? What were they thinking? Are they trying to put us off buying it?
