Book Description

0940134942 978-0940134942 October 2004
This is the English translation of the Annals of Ireland by the Four Masters as translated by Connellan. It covers the years 1171 to 1506 A.D.. (This is Part One of his work, Part Two takes up the timeline where this volume leaves off.).

Due to the expense and importance of this work we publish this volume on its own here. This translation of the Annals was the first ever made into English. Includes four color frontispiece, extensive footnotes of genealogical and historical importance, with preface and introduction.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Real Deal, January 3, 2005
By

This review is from: The Annals of Ireland: Translated from the Original Irish of the Four Masters, Part 1 (Hardcover)
I was ecstatic when I realized that I could buy from Amazon the famous work that I saw quoted so many places, The Annals of the Four Masters.
Not inexpensive, but it is exactly what it purports to be, the annal compilation for the years outlined in the description. Note that this is not all of the annals compiled by the Masters, nor is it the only edition that was ever published (in the 19th century). But this is the most popular edition and the only one that I could find in print today. Great map and name index and just generally well-made.
If you feel the 'need' to touch a historical source and hold it in your hands - then you should buy this edition.

2.0 out of 5 stars Where are the Annals from 550-1171?, October 17, 2007
This review is from: The Annals of Ireland: Translated from the Original Irish of the Four Masters, Part 1 (Hardcover)
Does anyone know why this "Part 1" translation doesn't cover 550-1171? That time period is covered in the original... According to the wikipedia entry the Annals cover 550-1616.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Ever Translation of the Annals into English, book 1 of 2 book set., November 21, 2007
This review is from: The Annals of Ireland: Translated from the Original Irish of the Four Masters, Part 1 (Hardcover)
Here is part one of the first major translation of the Annals of Ireland by the Four Masters into English. The large folding Irish family location map is in volume two, also available on Amazon. The set contains all the original text first published in 1846 by Connellan, including the four color 'cover' page at the front of the book. If you have an appreciation for Irish history, Connellans translation was part of the Irish revival in the mid-19th century, and a fitting work for any collection. If your budget is tight you can go with part one only. I would recommend getting volume 2 as well, for it contains the map and the new family name index for the map.
