Book Description

8 and up3 and up
A young Nebraska girl discovers the courage to save others during a life-threatening snowstorm.
It is 1888. Twelve-year-old Anna loves life on the Nebraska prairie where she lives with her parents and four-year-old brother in a simple sod house. She doesn't mind helping out with chores on her family's farm, especially when she is herding sheep with her beloved pony, Top Hat. Here, on the open prairie, Anna feels at home in the world. But at school she feels hopelessly out of place. Arithmetic is too hard, her penmanship is abysmal, and stuck-up Eloise Baxter always laughs at her mistakes.
When a fierce blizzard suddenly kicks up on a mild winter day, Anna, her schoolmates, and young teacher, Miss Simmons, become trapped in the one-room schoolhouse. The kerosene is gone and the wood for the stove is low. Then the wind tears away the roof and door. Anna knows they must escape before it is too late. Does she have the courage and strength to lead the others through the whiteout to safety?
Author Alison Hart offers young readers a dramatic story of rescue and survival set in a nineteenth-century homesteading community and featuring a plucky, determined protagonist.
An author's note provides more information about prairie life in the late nineteenth century and about the great storm that hit Nebraska in 1888, now known as "The School Children's Blizzard."

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5–Anna Vail, 12, lives in a sod house on the Nebraska prairie in 1888. She enjoys farm chores and riding her beloved pony, Top Hat, but feels clumsy and out of place at school. When an unexpected blizzard traps her class in their one-room schoolhouse, it's up to Anna and Top Hat to lead everyone to safety. But will they make it through the blinding snow before they freeze to death? Anna is a strong, appealing heroine, and the story is suspenseful. A short afterword with black-and-white illustrations tells more about the 1888 Schoolchildren's Blizzard on which the story is based and discusses details of life on the Nebraska prairie. Fans of the American Girls series (Pleasant Co) or Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books (HarperCollins) will also enjoy Anna's Blizzard.–Kathleen E. 5.0 out of 5 stars Thumbs Up for "Anna's Blizzard", August 30, 2011
By
This review is from: Anna's Blizzard (Hardcover)
I stayed up late the night I received this book. I could not go to sleep until I found out how the children in "Anna's Blizzard" managed in the storm. This riveting historical fiction book by Alison Hart brings life on the prairie in the late 1800's alive for young readers. The story of the "Children's Blizzard" is narrated by Anna, a reluctant student. Readers will get a snapshot of Anna's home life and her experiences in a one-room soddy school during one of the worst blizzards of the century. Anna's horse, Top Hat, plays an important role in the story so horse lovers will love it as well. The author includes historical information about the "Schoolchildren's Blizzard" and life on the prairie in an appendix.

I would have loved to have had this chapter book as a third grade teacher. It would appeal to both the girls and the boys and would have been a great choice to enrich our Social Studies and Reading curricula.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great book for kids, January 23, 2011
This review is from: Anna's Blizzard (Hardcover)
This is going to be a quick review.

Anna's Blizzard is definitely a children's book. It reminded me of the American Girl books that I used to read when I was in elementary school. This book is pretty short at only 141 pages, but I had a hard time getting through it because it was just too young and simple for me. If I read this book at the age when I still enjoyed those American Girl books, then I am pretty sure I would have loved this book. It is the kind of book that sneaks a history lesson into the story since it is based on the winter storm of 1888 in Nebraska. If you have young children, I have no doubt that they will enjoy this book.
