5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, May 31, 2006
This review is from: Anna's Fight for Hope: The Great Depression (1931) (Sisters in Time #20) (Paperback)
This book, I must say, is one of the best books my daughter has ever come across. I have also read it and found it very delightful. This book helps grow your faith in Christ and learn a bit of history of the time. Each story has a main charater that has a deleima and will over come it by the conclusion. My daughter is very fond of historical fiction, and as she always says about this series - Their a must!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Birds-Eye View of The Great Depression, September 13, 2005

The year is 1931, and twelve-year-old Anna Harrington has fallen on tough times. Unfortunately, she doesn't have it the worst. During this time of the Great Depression, Anna knows many people who are way more poverty-stricken than she is, and that includes her best friend, Dot's, family. Dot, a girl who used to be very rich, and dressed lavishly in gorgeous dresses, is now starving, and her family is on the verge of losing their home. While her newfound friend, Chet, a boy of only 17-years of age, has been thrown out of his house, and now spends his days riding the rails as a hobo, looking for a place to work, a nice meal, and a roof over his head. Unfortunately, he is unable to find any of the above, and ends up in trouble with the law. Anna, and her cousin, Fred, spend their days praying and hoping that the Depression will end, but, when it doesn't, they come up with an idea to help their suffering friends. But when the authorities begin making difficulties, Anna feels helpless, and wonders if all of her efforts will ever be enough.

I stumbled across the SISTERS IN TIME books by accident, and purchased ANNA'S FIGHT FOR HOPE on a whim, hoping that it would interest me. I need not have worried, for from page one, I found myself caught up in the life and times of twelve-year-old Anna, and felt that I was right there beside her as she struggled to help out her friends, as well as her family. JoAnn A. Grote's descriptions of life in 1931, during the Great Depression, as well as her historical information, was very well written, and extremely interesting. I even found myself learning about how certain bills and laws came to be, as well as information of the presidents who served the country during that time. Readers who love learning about history, or enjoyed the AMERICAN GIRL, KIT'S stories, will adore ANNA'S FIGHT FOR HOPE, and head back to the SISTERS IN TIME series for more adventures involving various other characters, and time periods.

4.0 out of 5 stars You Should Read Anna's Fight for Hope, June 1, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Anna's Fight for Hope: The Great Depression (1931) (Sisters in Time #20) (Paperback)
I liked Anna's Fight for Hope a lot. However, I don`t like that the author talked so much about Anna`s cousin, Fred. I think the book would be better if it told more about Anna and less about Fred.
But besides that, I loved the book. (In fact, I`m reading Betsy`s River Adventure and just ordered the other four books in the Sisters in Time series.)
