I would not have bought this in a real life bookstore. Photos are mostly black & white, which makes them hard to follow. Directions are sketchy by modern standards. Lastly I am a knitter and they are mostly crocheted afghans.

Anne Orr's Afghans to Knit and Crochet is a classic that no needleworker's library should be without. Even if you never make one of these afghans, the designs can be used in so many ways. There is a chart of an Old English Alphabet. I can see one big, bold initial crocheted into a seat cover. If you lke to cross-stich, try the beautiful horse head motif taken from the sleigh robe, and work it onto a denim shirt. The children will be delighted with an Unusual Afghan depicting circus motifs. Most of the crocheted afghans are worked in the Tunisian stitch. The knitted patterns are easy but there is a patternfor a baby afghan that includes a lacey edging the looks a bit advanced. Ann Orr was a prolific pattern writer and here you will find samples of her best known work. There are black and white photos and illustrations. The front and back cover are in color.

First, how strange that someone would pan a Dover book that cost $2.50 and complain about it being in b&w.

Second, how strange and awesome that the book isn't just for crochet and knit but these are GRAPHS for stitchers too!!

Anne Orr wrote this book in 1941 and Dover published this slightly abridged reprint in 1987. You see the black afghan on the cover? Well, there's a detailed chart for those roses and what's even better is 5 pretty elaborate floral bands, one with a large water bird, that you could use to make a bellpull. There's also a blanket with horse heads and an initial--the alphabet is quite nice.

I hardly knit much, no duplicate stitch, and don't know how to crochet. But my mom and sis could use these. And I can use these charts to make the counted thread embroidery I enjoy.

Not a bad book at all.
