I'm no fan of most rap and hip hop or most poetry, for that matter, so I was amazed by this movie. It captured me. Not only did it give me a new appreciation for the art of "rhyming," but the compelling story and talented cast really won me over.

This movie was very ill. Anyone in their right mind could tell Anne was a light skin Black, even though both her parents are Latino. 5.0 out of 5 stars An Incredible Experience, September 18, 2004
This review is from: Anne B. Real (DVD)
I'm no fan of most rap and hip hop or most poetry, for that matter, so I was amazed by this movie. It captured me. Not only did it give me a new appreciation for the art of "rhyming," but the compelling story and talented cast really won me over.

At the risk of mis-branding this film a "chick flick," Lisa France has tapped into an inner voice and angst that's too typical of American teenage girls (and women). When we allow others (let alone ourselves) to discourage us from pursuing our dreams and talents, we are our truly own worst enemies.

In reality, this is no "chick flick." It's a gritty slice of city life, with its share of violence and loss. You won't find any incarnation of Meg Ryan here (not even in the pleasant surprise of Jackie Martling's brief stint as a curmudgeonly teacher).

Simply put, I was swept away, by the music, by the energy, by the writing, by the acting, by the vision and visuals, and, of course, by the unique play of words flowing from the experience of this aspiring teen "rhymer" against the inspirational words of Anne Frank and the resulting evolution of this teenage girl.

This is a movie you will want to own and share with friends of all ages and watch over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic film!, July 26, 2005

Although I love the music, I'm not normally a fan of hip-hop/rap movies, but this one really struck a cord with me.
Anne Frank's diary has been my favorite book since I was a small child. It's one I've related to through my life just as Cynthia did in this film.
It's very rare I can say this, but...I have nothing bad to say about this film. It is just phenomenal!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Real 8 Mile, October 22, 2003

I had the pleasure of viewing this feature at my university and talk with the director after. This movie to put it simply is amazing. Anne B Real captures the true story of a young girl with dreams beyond any of her friends and families comprehension. Half black and half latino, no believes she has a chance to make anything out of herself in the world. Death helps her find her way and helps Anne break out of the little box she was trapped in since her fathers death.

This movie is a must see for anyone who liked 8 mile. This would be a bigger hit, if 8 mile wouldn't have came out at the same time. Unlike 8 mile it doesn't sugar coat the way life is on the street, and doesn't rely on big names stars to help promote the film. There are a few known actors in the movie but for half of the actors, this is their first time in front of the camera.

The director is amazing in her camera work and her story line. She struggled hard to make sure there wasn't a single swear word in the entire movie, a feat never heard of these days. I look forward to seeing more of her films in the future and wish her luck on all her ventures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anne B. Realistic you are!!, February 14, 2005
This review is from: Anne B. Real (DVD)
Funny, my sister who is 13 years old wanted me to watch this movie, because it reminded her of me (some parts) by watching this movie, I already knew which parts she was talking about and SHE WAS RIGHT!! I like this movie a lot, and I was not expecting to hear TIGHT rhymes, although they were not "wh#re rhymes" like some people probably expected because of the ratings they gave this movie which is just ignorant. Her rhymes talk about REALITY. But I was expecting an inspirational approach, which was what I got. SOOOOOOO many people discourage me from my goals, talents etc... And I saw myself through this movie (in SOME PARTS). I mean, it seemed like I was watching myself on TV.

I do agree that you KNOW this is a black woman (like I am) who is portraying latina woman. Well, I dont think it is a difference, but Has anyone noticed that three of the characters from this movie were from the series OZ, which I am also a big fan of as well. The music that they played during the movie sounded like that video wh#re Gloria Velez, because she "raps" too. Also, the woman that played the main character did not seem like she was really rapping in the end. It seemed like she was lip singing. But, if someone is expecting this to just be a movie about Hardcore Gangsta rap, then this is NOT the movie for you, go to a concert. I was also expecting her to be really big in the end, but this movie showed more than just being a successful rapper with fancy cars and clothes and bags of money. Just putting yourself out there to alteast KNOW that you can do it is what really counts. So, I am glad that this movie did not show her becoming a big time rapper. Lets be realistic, it just does not blossom like that for everyone.

If you are looking for an inspirational movie that is REALISTIC (to me its realistic) then this is the movie for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must See for Teen Youth Groups!, December 28, 2008

I first saw this movie at the Baltimore Film Festival several years ago. It made an impression on me and more importantly on my then 15 year old daughter. It was then that I decided to show this film to the teens I teach. Anne B. Real helps to open up discussions with teens about so many pertinent contemporary topics such as self-esteem and peer pressure. It also helped to link the story of Anne Frank to the main characters in this story.

Thank you to all who brought this film to life for our students!

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Moving, December 22, 2008

This movie touches the heart. It is about a young woman's dreams and family interactions. It is about broken trust and self reliance and development. It is about addiction destroying relationships. It is about a young woman's struggles to move forward in life against opposition and with a frayed support system.

1.0 out of 5 stars Anne B. Real Dull, October 7, 2004
This review is from: Anne B. Real (DVD)
This movie was very ill. Anyone in their right mind could tell Anne was a light skin Black, even though both her parents are Latino. What is the point of a Latina story if she is Black and her Latina friend was really Italian. Anne B. Real Rap was Good and better accepted if they made a sound track CD. How can someone make a Rap music movie without any sound track. A Rapper to be real for what? nothing The movie was senseless since it is hard to believe that someone could build a Rap career on the Raps of Anne, which are dull and lose because Anne came on stage saying she wrote them, Rapping. Then the movie ends, nothing about Anne or success as a good writer, which this movie lacked.
If this is a true story, it should stay in someones house on home video
