I couldn't put this book down!,
By Jennifer Church (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Anne Boleyn (Hardcover)
This book accurately depicts the life of Anne Boleyn after meeting Henry VIII, her life as Catherine of Aragon's maid of honor, her struggle to become Queen of England, and her struggle to maintain that status by delivering Henry an heir. This was the first book in years that kept me so captivated that I couldn't put it down! It was amazing; it was educational; it was entertaining. READ IT!

You play you pay,
By Kris (Oxnard, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Anne Boleyn
This book is very intriguing: fraught with intrigues? It starts off slowly, like a typical romance, but it sure picks up at the end. If this is so-called "historical romance," it's not at all what I expected. The people do talk a bit funny compared to our language today, but that adds to the authenticity.Anne has a lot of moxie, going after the King like she does, and later gossiping about his little thing. What did she expect? You can't talk about a guy like that and expect to get off scot free, can you? Well, she plays and she pays. It's sad toward the end, especially when she aborts the little boy (not purposely) and then is escorted to the Tower, her female enemies hounding her along the way. Talk about getting shafted. But she does recover and gain some dignity at the end. Her Uncle Norfolk must have been a real evil character. Thomas Cromwell was righteously evil and here's one book where the bad guys come out on top, or so it seems. I did not know the story of Anne and Henry before reading this book, and it is just so bitter sweet, I want to read other books. Phillipa Gregory's book about the "Other Boleyn Girl" will be next. Diximus.

Great book - such a pleasure to deal with Amazon - they found this book which I could not obtain anywhere else in the world and shipped it to me quickly and efficiently - reasonable price and shipping rates. The book is in excellent condition in spite of being second hand - I am impressed by how easy it is to deal with the people at Amazon. Thank you.

Very interesting, but could have been better,

This review is from: Anne Boleyn (a novel) (Hardcover)
I enjoyed this book, but as I was reading, I kept wishing the writing were better. The verbs were all over the place, and it started to plod after a while. The author did a pretty good job of Anne being seductive and catching the king's attention to spite him, but by the end it was really lackluster, like the romance-well, she did keep him dangling for 6 years! I was surprised by how passive she was at the end.
I also have to say, if you have ever seen the film Anne of the Thousand Days, well, now I know where they got the script from. The trouble is now, though, that there does not seem to be anything new about 'history's most glorious troublemaker'. This book was published in 1957 and it just keeps being repeated in various ways by anyone who deals with Anne historically, or fictionally. Still, it is a good way to pass the time and will be enjoyed by everyone bitten with 'Tudor-mania.'

Anne is more like Kathryn,
This review is from: Anne Boleyn (Coronet Books) (Paperback)
I had really high hopes for this novel, especially after all of the positive reviews I found here. I loved the first scene and was excited for the rest of the novel. But by page 37 I found myself dropping it back on my "To Be Read" pile. Why? Anne took on a personality all too like her unfortunate cousin, Kathryn Howard. Here, Anne is betrayed as a flippant girl, not the intelligent woman she was. Perhaps at another time I'll pick it up and find that the rest of it is much better. I more strongly recommend Brief Gaudy Hour: A Novel of Anne Boleyn by Margaret Campbell Barnes (my personal favorite), The Concubine by Norah Lofts,The Lady in the Tower: The Wives of Henry VIII and Murder Most Royal: The Story of Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard(both by Jean Plaidy), and The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn by Robin Maxwell. For young adults, Doomed Queen Anne: A Young Royals Book (Young Royals) by Carolyn Meyer can't be beat. Marie Louise Bruce's ANNE BOLEYN is also extremely enjoyable, but it is a biography.
