Anne Elizabeth's Pulse of Power is more like an ongoing magical working. It opens on a fairly realistic occult ritual where three beings are performing a combined sacrificial working to empower another being. Who this mystery person is does not become apparent until we encounter Tia Stanton in a mundane situation and then again in the Vivant Magical Shop in Manhattan. From there, things take off both literally and magically with Tia discovering that dreams can be real nightmares and that sometime bad is good and good is evil. The fast paced story has lots of action and events do indeed build until she powers up in her own Pulse of Power. The rest is the stuff of heroes, real choices and superheroes.

I loved the images and colors all around with busty beauties and brawny, big jawed heroes, snarky curmudgeons and drippingly evil bad guys. It was fun having a girl be the action guy in the story line and was definitely a mind teaser seeing the thoughts going through her head at times. Keeping one's cool in dangerous situations might be the secret to focusing and controlling all that power, whether it's beauty, psychic ability or a magical gift. There's so much going on in this graphical novel that it just has to have a sequel or three (whether it's billed as a one-time deal or not). The cover art by Brett Booth is truly a pin-up worthy of a foldout (come on guys!). The Tia on the cover seems much wilder than the Tia portrayed by Márcio Fiorito and inked by Mohan Sivakami in the book's frames. There she seems more human and vulnerable. I'm hoping that in future issues the interior artwork and images reflect Tia's Otherworldly warrior woman look (when and wherever that happens; please, please make it soon!).

The thing I liked the most in this title was Mr.Fiorito's art. Look at his original character sketches at the end of the book and you will notice that the coloring might have been more complimentary if a tad more subdued. His style produces a clear sense of action and place that is beautifully exemplified in the double page spread depicting VIVANT's interior.

The universe of Pulse of Power holds promise, but I think it would have been better developed in a mini-series instead of one graphic novel. At a certain point the plot feels rushed to a conclusion and the ending is kind of too fairy tale-ish to my personal taste. I wish we could learn more about Tia's past - how and why she is who she is. Same would be valid for Witt and his allies.

Still, good fun and great art. Worth the purchase.
