Grade 5-7Magellan spans the subject's life and includes the continuation of the voyage after his death. Columbus essentially ends with Columbus' first voyage; his three successive voyages are condensed into less than a page. Since the hero of the first voyage became a despised man after later voyages, this book gives a false picture of him. The authors explain that these men were charismatic, driven visionaries, yet the writing does not bring them to life, and reading becomes a chore rather than an adventure. Confusion exists when too many characters are not reintroduced, and the locations are not clear. While the format (half text, half color illustrations) is attractive, many of the pictures are unnecessary; except for the photographs in the appendix, all are uncaptioned. There is no map in Magellan ; only a small one (unlabeled) is included in Columbus . Some illustrations are inaccurate. Queen Isabella, who was at least 40 when Columbus returned from the new world, looks about 19 in the picture. It is known that Columbus had white hair by the time he was 30; nowhere in this book is he seen with white hair. An encyclopedia will provide better organized, more easily understood information, and with so much better material available, most collections won't miss these titles. Tridenti tells the story of Anne Frank in the easy style of a storyteller. She chronicles Anne's life from her sheltered childhood, through her adolescence to her tragic death at Bergen-Belsen. Final chapters describe Mr. Frank's discovery of his daughter's diary and his commitment to spread Anne's message of faith and hope for mankind. An end section extends the story of Anne Frank as well as countless others persecuted at the hands of Nazis. The writing is clear, and the warm soft illustrations of the Franks' life are well contrasted with the strident harsh illustrations of the Nazis.
