I failed to read carefully the description of the book, so my dissatisfaction is my own fault. The book is about the size of an old Sears catalog, not very inviting to a young reader. I could not bring myself to give this book to a fifth grader that I was trying to encourage to develop a love of reading. Instead, I went to a local bookstore and purchased the same books...

Anne of Green Gables was a book selection on a my son's list of required summer reading. Since I knew my 12 yr old son would never chose a book whose main character was a girl, I told him that it was required reading. My son read the book and found it entertaining ( I caught him laughing aloud a few times). He thought it was a little predictable, because in almost chapter Anne got in trouble, and someone else "had to clean up the mess." I decided to read the book too. I just finished it a few days ago, and it is now one of my favorite books! The descriptions of Green Gables, and the country side are so beautiful, and Anne's love of nature and life itself are contagious. I think many females must see something of themselves it that red headed girl. Is it her desire to be accepted, her love of nature and beauty, her melodrama, her bad temper, her vivid imagination, her stubborness, her honesty, her love of competion, her intellegence, or her nobility? We can find these qualities, and faults in ourselves and in so many women we know. We see our selves in the 9 year old orphan girl, whether we are 8, 10, 30, or going on 50.

5.0 out of 5 stars Three-in-one classics!, April 29, 2010
This is a great edition of three classic works.
For some funny reason, Amazon has made it hard to find the book's description so, here it is:

Anne of Green Gables is a bestselling series of books by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery first published in 1908. Originally written as fiction for readers of all ages, in recent decades they have been considered a children's series.
Since publication, Anne of Green Gables has sold over 50 million books.

The three books in this edition,

* Anne of Green Gables
* Anne of Avonlea
* Anne of the Island

are the first 3 volumes of the series and are the parts of the series most suited for young readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Option for Kindle, August 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
After reading other descriptions and digging through the *many* ebook options for Anne of Green Gables, I finally settled on this one.

As the cover says, it is unabridged and contains three books in the series.

What a truly wonderful story. I smiled and laughed all the way through this book. If reading about the letter `e' and puffed sleeves can make me do that - the author has succeeded in her quest. This title now has a spot on my all time favorite list. I was so glad to have Anne of Avonlea waiting to read as I finished book one.

Great formatting at a great price.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most inspiring book I ever read., September 14, 1998

This review is from: Anne of Green Gables (3 Volumes) (Hardcover)
I have read Anne of Green Gables a thousand times. Anne presents young girls with a worthy role model. She's hearty, imaginative, dedicated to family, friends and school. Montgomerey takes the time to bring all those around Anne into vivid life. I always wished that I could be just like Anne and come through all of my troubles with her spirit and imagination. I highly recommend reading the rest of the series, especially the last, Rilla of Ingleside.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best "Anne" book, November 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Anne of Green Gables (3 Volumes) (Hardcover)
This is my favourite in the "Anne of Green Gables" series. It's the last book before Anne loses most of her girlishness, and it also has the benefit of being set both in Avonlea and the new and interesting Kingsport. Reading this book makes me wish I could have gone to Redmond College a hundred years ago! It introduces a lot of new characters, but this isn't as irritating as in the later books (I still love those books though!). My favourite character is Phil Gordon- who avoids cliches by being beautiful, smart and funny but still likeable. The book is sad, funny and romantic but still realistic. Highly recommended for anyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Tribute to Dreams, Freindship and Imagination, February 5, 1998

This review is from: Anne of Green Gables (3 Volumes) (Hardcover)
Pick this book up and your spirits will follow. I can see Avonlea as if I were there. Lucy Maud Montgomery has painted a canvas and made it come alive with warm, thoughtful, imaginative characters. Anne Shirley and the rest of the cast will grab your hearts and not let go. I first read this book when I was a girl and I have read it over and over since then never tiring of Anne's adventures or misadventures (whichever you prefer). A truly wonderful story!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great! I love it!, November 27, 1999
This review is from: Anne of Green Gables (3 Volumes) (Hardcover)
I think that "Anne of Green Gables" is a great story. Heart warming and sweet. I think it is even better if you have some sort of connection to Anne, like I do. I played her in a local production of the play "Anne of Green Ggables", and I have tons in common with her. I would recomed this book to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Story of Anne Shirley, of Green Gables..., May 24, 2011
Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery's beloved "Anne of Green Gables" novels have captivated generations of fans. The first three novels, gathered in this set, follow the life and adventures of an imaginative red-haired orphan from her accidental arrival in the small town of Avonlea, Prince Edward Island, through her teenage years, to her arrival at womanhood.

In "Anne of Green Gables", a bachelor farmer and his sister decide to take in a young orphan boy to help with the chores. What they get is the scrawny eleven year-old Anne Shirley, who has known only poverty and neglect in her short life. Matthew and Marilla decide to keep Anne, who will be both a handful and a delight to raise. Anne is good-hearted, intelligent and hardworking, but impulsive and often distracted by her own imagination. The result is a series of hilarious misadventures as Anne earns her place in the world. At 16, Anne will pass up a chance at college to stay with her ailing foster mother.

In "Anne of Avonlea", Anne becomes the village school marm, molding young minds, helping her foster mother care for two orphaned twins, and navigating the delights and shoals of the teenage years in a small village. At age 18, she will earn a second chance at college.

In "Anne of the Island", Anne takes on the challenges of college away from her beloved island home. Anne will excell in school, make new friends, and discover that she has grown into an attractive young woman. Anne's courtship by a series of young men will be the source of considerable humor and some emotional anguish. In the end, Anne will have to choose between a wealthy man who embodies her notions of romance, and the lifelong friend and kindred spirit who completes her.

"Anne of Green Gables: Three in One Set" is very highly recommended for its entertaining story, gentle humor, and keen wisdom of the human condition, to its once and future fans of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Escape, March 11, 2011
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I spent a rainy day rereading the first of this series on my Kindle. It was every bit as enjoyable and engrossing as the first time I read it when I was a young girl. I shed more than one tear as I escaped to Avonlea and left with a little of the much needed innocence, clarity, and old fashioned wisdom of Anne's time. Sometimes the current day is too fast and too complicated; Anne of Green Gables is the perfect remedy.
