5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for every girl, young or young at heart
Anne of Green Gables is one of my all-time favorite books. Anne is a person almost everyone can relate to in some way or another. 3.0 out of 5 stars I liked the book because it was heart-warming.
Anne comes from a bad family and then she moves in with a good family. Anne learns to love and appreciate her new family. I learned that it is hard to be adopted into a family that really does not want you. I liked this book, but it was boring. I liked this book because it was a heart-warming book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for every girl, young or young at heart, March 5, 2000
This review is from: Anne of Green Gables (Paperback)
Anne of Green Gables is one of my all-time favorite books. Anne is a person almost everyone can relate to in some way or another. Anne is launched into the "depths of despair" as soon as she finds out the horrible truth that the Mathew and Marilla really sent for a boy from the orphanage. Her fiery temper gets the better of her at some of the worst possible times. Such as when she vows that she will never forgive Gilbert Blythe for calling her carrots, as if smashing a slate over his head is not enough. This is a wonderful book that L. M. Montgomery has really shown her skill as a writer and novelist in. I have read the entire Anne of Green Gables Series and am also, like another reader, saving them all for my daughter some day. If you want a book that you can thoroughly enjoy, this is the one, although I have one warning that you may have a hard time putting it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring!, December 11, 1999
This review is from: Anne of Green Gables (Paperback)
Without a doubt this classic piece of work shaped my life in various ways. I cannot emphasize how positive Anne Shirley is as a character. She is a heroine who is not only beautiful(spirit) but extremely intelligent. The most drastically different aspect of the novel is the fact that the romantic male character, Gilbert, gestures to the idea that "being smart is better than being pretty". How often spoken or written are those words? I believe that phrase is something young girls must recognize as well as understand in life. For beauty is fleeting and knowledge is eternal. Timeless and pure, I suggest this novel for anyone who loves a bit of comedy, romance, intrigue, and pure fun. This novel has it all. Enjoy!

That's Anne with an 'E'. Yes, I LOVE all of the tales of Anne. I have read and re-read these books many, many times. Everytime I finish one I long to start over again. In this the first book of the series we are introduced to Anne. We have the privilage of sharing in her love, her triumph, her trials. This book is truly a must read of all young (or not so young) woman.

5.0 out of 5 stars Revisiting my childhood, September 3, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Anne of Green Gables (Paperback)
I read these books when I was in elementary school, and I loved them then. Recently, I was on a trip out of town and went browsing at a used bookstore. I found a boxed set of the first three Anne books and decided to reread these books that I adored. Rereading your favorite childhood books is always a bit risky--sometimes you find that your memory of the books is better than the books themselves, or that you have simply gotten too old to enjoy them anymore. Not so with Anne. The writing is wonderful, the characters are rich and entertaining, and the setting is so beautifully described that it made me long to take a vacation to Prince Edward Island.

Anne is easy to love, even (especially) when she misbehaves. I loved revisiting her various escapades: her fits of temper unleashed upon Rachel Lynde and Gilbert Blythe; falling off the ridgepole; jumping on Diana's Aunt Josephine; making Diana drunk; and nearly drowning while playing Lady Elaine. I was also incredibly moved by Anne's interactions with both Matthew and Marilla. I remembered crying as a child when I read about Anne's interactions with Matthew. But I was also surprised about the quiet sweetness and poignancy of Anne's scenes with Marilla. Reading this book as an adult made me more aware of the fact that Anne saved Marilla and Matthew as much as they saved her.

Mark Twain remarked that he had never met a more delightful childhood hero or heroine than Anne in literature. What high praise for L.M. Montgomery! I have read a great deal of literature with childhood heros and heroines, and I may agree with Mr. Twain's assessment. Anne deserves a place in literature along with Huck Finn and Scout Finch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anne- The wonderful spirit we can love forever, May 8, 2002

I am now an adult, and let me tell you, many years after initally falling in love with Anne, I still absolutely love the Anne series of books. This is a character with so much heart, vivacity, energy, imagination; she is a true "kindred spirit" and I thoroughly recommend the book to all!

For those who have read the book, there is a great miniseries of Anne of Green Gables AND Anne of Avonlea (the second installment in the Anne series)that can probably be rented at any [local video store]. This is great way to relive the book, and it is done so well. For those who have kids, they'll love it, heck I still love to watch it.

Best Anne wishes to all!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book, December 5, 2000

At the grand old age of 18, I read _Anne of Green Gables_ for the first time, because many people had recommended it to me as "a classic." And I had avoided "classics" like the plague, preferring new and modern books. But it is a wonderful, enchanting tale. Anne Shirley is a quirky, energetic, imaginative(and talkative) heroine, never afraid to say exactly what she thinks. She's the kind of girl I would like to be(or at least I would want a best friend like her), and her relationships with all the characters of Avonlea are utterly charming, and I would recommend this book for all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much better than I expected!, October 24, 2000
This review is from: Anne of Green Gables (Paperback)
At first I'd thought this book was another of those fancy-schmancy, dragging novels, but I found myself thoroughly enjoying reading about Anne Shirley of Green Gables. It is about how a young orphan girl finds a home at Green Gables in Avonlea, Prince Edward Island. Each chapter is like a short story. They are funny when Anne is younger, like the episode when she dyed her hair green :), but as she grows older they start to deal more with her education, and, near the end of the book, depressing subjects like death and of the possible loss of Anne losing her beloved home, Green Gables. The characters are written about in a way that you can easily become familiar with them. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good book, August 16, 2000
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Anne of Green Gables (Paperback)
Ann always gets herself into trouble, then gets herself out of it. She's funny and she uses lots of big words. I would like to be her friend. There is a sad part near the end that helps Ann grow up. I would recommend this book to my best friend.

4.0 out of 5 stars a childhood favorite, July 18, 2000
This review is from: Anne of Green Gables (Paperback)
This book is a real charmer. The rest of the series is nice, and you learn what happens to Anne and the rest of them, but none of them reach the heights of this lovely tale about the orphan who won over so many hearts. Buy it for a young girl...I know I must have read it 10 times, and I still have a tattered copy at my parents' house.
