This photographic biography lures us into the brilliant mind of poet Anne Sexton. Furst's beautiful pictures portray her as intelligent, thoughtful and sensuous, haughty and pensive, and we are drawn into the rich complex verses written in her own hand. We are allowed to peek at her personal correspondence, and look inside the poet to the woman and her spirit. Surely, this book is a "must have" for those who are looking for the real Anne Sexton.

Furst's intimate photographs are the centerpiece of this book. It is a chance to gaze into the face of one of this incredible poet. The portraits enable you to feel Anne's pain and the joy. These images are as revealing as any of her poems. This book is a must for all sincere Sexton readers.

What makes this treasure of a book so haunting (according to what I have learned from reading other biographies, including "Searching for Mercy Street," by Linda Gray Sexton, and from Furst's very poignant introduction to this book), is that while these photos were being taken, Anne Sexton was preparing her legacy -- she knew these would be her last photos.

And the candid photographs of Anne, taken in April and again before August, when she and Furst met to go over the final prints, show a wise, extremely intelligent, and unusually beautiful who had earned the proud yet tentative, sensitive geography of her face that she presented to the camera -- she doesn't seem to be "posing," even when she was; her natural self just walks off the page and greets you (much like many of her personal letters and poems included, both typed and handwritten). She faced the camera with as much truth as she approached her work -- she is wholly and completely herself, and Furst's work captures this in ways that sometimes startled me -- but again, that quality is what makes the photographs so effective. They are REAL.

The most haunting photograph of all, however, is on page 77 (softcover). It is a full-page photograph of Joy, who was studying photography with Furst while staying with her mother that summer, and, as Joy wrote in a letter to Anne that she never received, in which "the leaves speak for themselves," so does this important, distinctive photograph. It is one of the finest I have ever seen. Joy's beautiful face speaks for itself.
