Book Description

P and upAnnie Pitts
During a class trip to the supermarket, Annie Pitts almost puts an end to her acting career before it even gets off the ground when she throws a dead fish at her enemy Matthew. As punishment, she's served up the least appetizing part in the school play on nutrition: the artichoke. But Annie proves that the show must go on, even when the actors forget their lines...or fall flat on their backs!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-- After hitting a classmate in the face with a fish on a class trip to the grocery store, would-be actress Annie Pitts is glad she still has a part in the upcoming school play. She's disappointed, however, to find that she has been cast as an artichoke. Witty and sophisticated for her eight years, Annie can be at times remarkably thick-headed and irritatingly conceited. She thinks, for no obvious reason, that the owner of the grocery store will ask her to star in a commercial. Readers will anticipate and enjoy her temporary humiliation as she brings the unintentionally hilarious play to a crashing conclusion. Already established as in illustrator of children's books, deGroat shows considerable promise as an author in this first effort. The short, breezy chapters are energized by the dramatic humor of her pencil illustrations. --Ruth Smith, formerly at Chicago Public Library

Review

"Amusing and highly palatable reading fare, with sprightly, realistically drawn illustrations that enhance the book's energy and fun." -- Booklist
