Book Description

9 and upAnnie Pitts
Annie Pitts, future actress extraordinaire, wants nothing more than to be chosen as the new Burger Barn poster kid, and she can't wait until the auditions on the day after Thanksgiving. Winning the contest would certainly impress her snooty cousin, Mercedes, and her pesky classmate, Matthew. But first she has to make it through a harrowing Thanksgiving dinner with both Matthew and Mercedes at the table! With her appetite for amusing antics, the irrepressible Annie Pitts has it her way in this deliciously enjoyable comedy.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-In this sequel to Annie Pitts, Artichoke (1992; o.p.) and Annie Pitts, Swamp Monster (1994; o.p., both S & S), the third grader auditions as a poster model for her favorite fast-food restaurant, and her "single parent plus grandma" family prepares for Thanksgiving with an ever-increasing guest list. Ten fast-moving chapters introduce a large cast of characters, including a boy Annie secretly likes and a female cousin with a shaved head. Readers will admire the redhead's spunk and find laughs in the book's yuck factor. The hamburger-loving protagonist eats oatmeal on a bun (with ketchup) for breakfast and "barfs" her Thanksgiving turkey. Unfortunately, deGroat's heavy-handed vocabulary lessons via Annie's "Learn-a-Word-a-Day calendar," with frequent repetition of those words, diminish the appealing levity. Add this title to collections in which the series already has a following.

From Booklist

Gr. 2-5. Always jockeying for center stage, the engaging, indomitable Annie Pitts once again steals the show, though not in the way she intended. Annie is determined to be the new poster kid for Burger Barn, her favorite restaurant. But before she even gets to her audition and photo shoot, she must compose a poem for school and endure Thanksgiving dinner with unwelcome (in her opinion) guests. Filled with clever, humorous plot details, these seemingly unrelated incidents meld into a delightful, laugh-out-loud example of how the dramatic and highly imaginative Annie embellishes everyday life. Energetic black-and-white drawings and the warm relationship between the spunky protagonist and her grandmother add even more to this installment in Annie's antics. Fans of Annie Pitts, Artichoke (1992) and Annie's other adventures won't be disappointed. Ellen Mandel
