Book Description

March 1, 2003 3 and upP and up
Siblings everywhere will identify with this charmingly realistic story of Shirley Hughes’s Alfie and his trying but lovable little sister.

Annie Rose and Alfie have lots of games they like to play together, like being scary monsters or running their own store. But there are some things Annie Rose is too little to do, and even some things Alfie would rather do without her. Still, if Annie Rose is ever sad or cranky, her big brother is the only person who can make her feel better. This is Shirley Hughes at her best - warm and wonderfully observed illustrations and a touching text convey the special bond between siblings.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K-Alfie tells about the things that he and his toddler sibling like to do together, separately, and with their parents or friends. But most special is his sister's dependence on him to be her "big brother" forever. This loving book about family relationships stresses the positive and enduring ties between siblings, and the natural feelings of protectiveness that the elder one possesses. The realistic gouache and oil-pastel illustrations show the children's bond to perfection. A special book for any household with more than one preschool child.

From Booklist

PreS-Gr.1. From the endearing English series that began with Alfie Gets in First (1982), this picture book features Alfie's observations about his little sister, Annie Rose. Endearing, yes. Sentimental, no. Hughes has a firm grasp on a toddler's traits and how annoying they can be to an older sibling. Still, Alfie knows his younger sister better than almost anyone--from early morning, when Annie Rose tosses her stuffed animals out of her crib, through days spent visiting the store or the beach and playing with their friends and with each other. Few artists have recreated the young child's body language and surroundings as faithfully as Hughes. The gouache-and-oil pastel illustrations teem with well-observed details--a playmate's untied shoelace, an over-the-shoulder glance of a supermarket shopper when Annie Rose throws a tantrum. The pages are packed with activities that toddlers will enjoy looking at over and over, yet the older child's point of view extends the interest range upward a bit. Older siblings who want to do the right thing will appreciate Alfie's understanding attitude toward his occasionally trying younger sister. From the appealing jacket to the touching ending, this picture book will please children and parents alike. Carolyn Phelan

5.0 out of 5 stars Uplifting reading for the big brother, August 13, 2005

This book sweetly celebrates the new--and life-long--relationship between a big brother and his little sister. This year, our 4-year-old son became a big brother. We received other books about big-brotherhood, but many present some pretty dire negatives (the baby will cry a lot, the baby will take your parents' attention, the baby will want your stuff) and I have never even bothered to read them to our son because I didn't want to taint his view of having a little sister. I have no hesitation in reading this book to our son, and as our baby girl grows, I will happily read it to her so she too can hear about the blessing of having a big brother. We initially got this book from the library, but are now purchasing it to keep on hand.

If you haven't met Alfie yet, this is a gorgeous introduction. We bought this for my 3 year old son when I was expecting my 2nd, which turned out to be a girl. My 3 year old listens very attentively and smiles in all the right places. It's as if he's wondering when he too will be able to do all these things with his little sister.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book makes me cry!, July 3, 2007

But in a good way. As a momma to a three-year-old boy and a one-year-old girl, the last line, about how they'll go on being big brother and little sister, "even until we're all grown up" does it to me every time! Such a sweet and realistic view of siblings at this age.
