Book Description

September 1, 2002 4 and up
A sweet retelling of the Noah's Ark story from the perspective of Noah's young granddaughter. A warmly satisfying tale with a glorious rainbow, enhanced by a special finish, on the final spread.

"Annie, little Annie, come and feed the llamas.
They're making such a clatter with their hooves again."

It's raining...again. Annie, Grandaddy's Noah's quick-footed and obliging assistant is rushed off her feet helping everybody in the Ark -- from quarrelling animals to grumpy grown-ups. Eventually, she is rewarded by finding not only a little peace and quiet, but the first bright glimpse of sunshine and a miraculous rainbow.

Eagle-eyed children will also spot a daring mouse tale hidden within the beautiful illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Though adapted from the same source, Harker's (Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star) journey on the ark is stylistically worlds away from Jerry Pinkney's (reviewed below). In this chipper version, young Annie scampers throughout the sailing vessel to tend to the animals, per the directions of "Grandaddy Noah" and other relatives. All the while, Annie hopes to find some peace and quiet amid the clatter and confusion on board. Annie's wish is closer to being granted as the rain finally ends and everyone dances for joy at the sight of the rainbow ("I knew it was a present... just for me!" Annie exults, not naming the donor of the "present"). The rainbow, like the raindrops on the jacket, is laminated; the shiny surfaces, along with the cheery watercolors of bright-eyed critters creating a rumpus and the sweet countenances of Annie and her family, are sure to prove inviting to very young readers. Ages 2-7.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-Noah's granddaughter hurries from one task to another on the crowded ark. Chickens in the pantry, snakes in the knitting basket, baby animals everywhere make her quest for a quiet corner difficult. Spirits brighten after the rain stops and a rainbow appears. Harker's ark brings to mind old-fashioned toys decorated in primary colors. Cuddly animals increase the sense of coziness amid the incessant activity. Children will enjoy following the work of a crew of mice who build their own boat and set sail. The most striking visual feature is the spread of a sparkling rainbow. Grandchildren sometimes appear in Noah books but seldom play a major role. This book won't replace standard retellings of the story, but it does offer a pleasant, low-key alternate view of the trip.
