Product Description

Organic Shells & Real Aged Cheddar is for parents who want organic and kids who want orange. Modeled after our original Shells & Real Aged Cheddar, Annie's created an organic version made with certified organic pasta and certified organic Real Aged Cheddar cheese. We color the cheese with annatto, a natural coloring used for centuries to make foods like butter and mustard colored naturally.

About the Brand

Annie's Homegrown is a good company with good people that makes good food and does good stuff. From the beginning, Annie impressed upon us the necessity of operating responsibly by giving back to the community. Because if you don't take care of the folks who are taking care of you, everything gets ugly. And anyone who thinks an ugly planet is a healthy planet is a wackadoo. Annie's motto: Eat Responsibly. Act Responsibly.

Annie's Homegrown has stayed committed to its goals even as the company has expanded. With distribution in all 50 states, it's become the second-largest brand of macaroni and cheese in the U.S. And in their own words: "We know we're the first most delicious."

History of Annie's Homegrown

After creating Smartfood in 1982, one of the fastest-selling snack food products in U.S. history, Annie Withey co-founded Annie's Homegrown in 1989 with the idea of making a great-tasting, all-natural macaroni and cheese. In the end, though, she did a lot more than that.

In 1998, Annie's Homegrown was the first to develop and introduce three amazing kinds of organic macaroni and cheese. At the end of 2001, Annie's introduced a line of certified organic pasta, dressed up in a lovely bright purple box. And in 2005, Annie's introduced three flavors of Deluxe Mac and Cheese, four awesome flavors of organic crackers that they call Cheddar Bunnies, and three flavors of graham crackers called Bunny Grahams, made with organic ingredients.

Annie continues to be the inspirational leader of Annie's. She works from her home in Connecticut, answering some consumer letters and providing input on new product and marketing ideas. She remains the company's corporate conscience.

From the Manufacturer

Real food tastes better

For 25 years, Annie’s has been nourishing families with simple, down-to-earth foods that taste great and are easy to love. We never use artificial flavors, synthetic colors, or preservatives in our mac and cheese. Made with real cheese from cows not treated with the growth hormone rBST*.

Our story:

In 1989, Annie Withey co-founded Annie’s Homegrown with the goal of giving families healthy and delicious foods and to show by example that a successful business can also be socially responsible. Annie chose Bernie, her pet rabbit, to be the brand’s 'Rabbit of Approval'. She put her address and phone number on the original boxes to encourage consumers to connect with her. Today, we continue to value direct and honest communication with our consumers.

Our products:

We sell premium products made from high-quality wholesome ingredients at affordable prices. Our products appeal to health-conscious consumers who seek to avoid the artificial flavors, synthetic colors and preservatives used in many conventional packaged foods. Today, we offer over 175 products, including mac and cheese, Cheddar Bunnies, fruit snacks, crackers, graham snacks, granola bars, salad dressings, condiments, and more.

Our ingredients:

Annie’s sources only from places and people we trust, with high emphasis on quality, as well as agricultural and environmental sustainability. We believe in transparency and we work with trusted suppliers to source only non-GMO ingredients.

1) I use a 1/2 cup of Dannon NonFat Plain Yoghurt (per the instructions) and find that even without butter or milk, the sauce is creamy, tangy, perfect.

2) Tabasco for a kick

3) Parsley (dried will do) because it is awesome.

4) Cracked red and black pepper because that's how I roll.

5) Tuna if you like tuna.

Result = wholesome joy.

We stopped buying the Kraft mac n' cheese once we got started on Annie's products. The cheese sauce tastes more like real cheese than the sweet, overprocessed Kraft sauce. Once you acquire a taste for Annie's, there's no going back! On the other hand, the kids' friends who come over for lunch often turn up their noses at our Annie's mac and cheese, because they are so accustomed to Kraft or the like. I like that Annie's are all-natural, too, but it's mainly the taste that keeps me coming back for more. A note about the shell kind: you get more for your money than the bunny or Arthur shapes. The kids love the cute shapes, so we buy both, but the shells are a better deal.

Flavor Name: Whole Wheat Shells & CheddarSize: 6 Ounce (Pack of 12) Verified Purchase
I've been eating Annie's Mac n' Cheese (not the whole wheat type) since 1994. Amazon offers a excellent price (around $1.50 per box for certified organic, whoa!) and if I'm going to commit upfront to 12 boxes of mac and cheese, I figured I try to be a little healthier and get the whole wheat type.

It is a quality product but it isn't suited to my taste buds. I am surprised because I prefer brown rice and wild rice to white rice and generally enjoy whole wheat products. But to this eater, the whole wheat shells were too heavy and chewy. The watery white cheddar sauce enhanced the pasta's rougher texture and blandness. (The white cheddar sauce is like an alfredo, and less creamy than Annie's regular cheddar.) My friends love this stuff, but I think it's an acquired tasted. If I had known what I know now, I'd have stuck with the enriched white (yet stripped of it's nutrients) shells or at least gone with the regular cheddar sauce.

*Update*
While still not a full-on fan, I enjoying this product more now that:

1. Tastes much better when cooked 10-11 minutes at sea-level (the box recommends 8-10), the texture is less rough and gummy and is more noodle-y.

2. Adding fresh herbs with the cheese sauce. It gives a depth to the flavor. My favorite herb to add (so far) is cilantro (add about 1/3 cup chopped after mixing in the cheese sauce). Other enjoyable variations were adding 2/3 cup of Italian parsley or 1/8 cup fresh dill leaves.

This is without a doubt one of the best "mac and cheese" products around. And it is good for you too! I noticed some negative reviews about the cheese sauce being too thin. YOU NEED TO DRAIN THE SHELLS REALLY WELL and this will remedy that. They are like tiny water buckets, so I stirred and shook the water out of them while they were in my collander and it did the trick. ENJOY!

This is fast food that tastes great. It really is pretty close to the real thing and tastes like "comfort food". The noodles aren't mushy. The cheese sauce is creamy & flavorful. I like to add some extra cheese. I also add veggies or a can of tuna now & then. Makes for a very quick meal. The organic and non-organic varieties taste exactly the same.

All by itself, I would have to give this a 3. But, as I've learned with most packaged food, it can be easily made into a 5. I prepare as described on the box and top with mixed Italian herbs, crushed red pepper, and a pinch of shredded Parmesan. Not only does it look more appetizing, but it tastes great! And these are things I usually keep around the house, so I just grabbed whatever I had and it only adds about 30 seconds to the prep process. I highly recommend if you're willing to add things you like to flavor it up.

I was looking for an organic mac-n-cheese that my kids would like and this is it. Not only is it organic but it has the whole grains that I wanted. Make sure to mix the cheese packet with organic milk in a separate bowl before adding to drained noodles to avoid clumps. I tried to skip this step by adding it directly to the noodles in the pot and ended up with lots of clumps. Price is better here on Amazon verses our local store that carries it.

We've been struggling to move our kids from processed foods to healthier alternatives over the last couple of years, and Annie's whole-wheat macaroni and cheese has been a big element of our success in this campaign... They love the taste and we feel good about the nutritional value, the quality of the food, and the relative "social conscience" that the company espouses.

By the way: it really is tasty stuff. I try not to eat a lot of carbs these days, but I always steal a few bites when I make them lunch. The creamy-cheese sauce is more reminiscent of a good, light alfredo than of the nasty, gluey, neon-orange stuff you get from the big brands, and whole wheat macaroni is mildly flavored (and therefore and easier transition for kids and processed-wheat addicts).
