Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2–5—A follow-up to Cory's Stories: A Kid's Book about Living with ADHD (American Psychological Assn., 2004) is a hands-on, how-to book for organizing an ADHD child. Annie is smart but she just can't stay focused on anything so she is always behind in class. With the help of her parents and teacher, she learns how to organize her work and is given other tips for completing her assignments. The book offers 10 easy-to-follow steps that begin with a clean, organized desk at school and a quiet, organized work space at home, and end with a signed reward contract. The in-between steps include secret reminders to focus, find a study buddy, set a goal, and have a daily planner and a homework folder. Comical color illustrations and a conversational tone explain that a youngster with ADHD is neither dumb nor an incurable behavioral problem. With the numbers of children diagnosed with ADHD growing, it is important for all of those affected to understand the condition. An extensive note for adults is included. This is an excellent resource for school libraries, professional collections, and parenting collections, and a great shared read for parent and child.—Wanda Meyers-Hines, Loudoun County Public Schools, Ashburn, VA

5.0 out of 5 stars Organization and Cooperation Works!, April 19, 2008
This nicely illustrated upper elementary level title provides easy, logical steps to help the disorganized child achieve school success. Many kids either are, or know someone like Annie, who has trouble staying focused. Seeing and reading about Annie, who can't find to finish the work she knows she started, will strike a common chord. We all cheer Annie's progress by the end. Highly recommended for grades 3-6.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of tips for kids, parents, teachers!, April 19, 2008

Children with organizational problems will recognize themselves in Annie, the smart but easily distracted heroine of this book. Without talking down to readers, the clear text and humorous illustrations describe how Annie, her parents, and her teacher collaborate to make a plan that helps her focus on and complete her schoolwork and homework. Lots of suggestions here that children can follow, either on their own or with adult help. A special section at the back directed to parents and educators makes this a great gift for any teacher -- or for the parent of a disorganized, inattentive child who isn't working up to his or her ability level.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful!, April 19, 2008
I bought this book for a nephew, who'd been having trouble keeping up in school. I'd struggled through homework problems with my own (ADHD) son, some years ago, and I wish I'd had this book to give me some help back then.

I think the previous reviewer is missing the point. You can't just hand a kid a book like this and expect him to educate himself, whether or not he's ADHD. My nephew's mother sat down with him, looked over the book with him and discussed some of the ideas, and together they worked out a plan just for him. He has his own work area now, and a new way of organizing his papers, and his parents say he's actually turning in school work. For him, that's a big improvement!
