This review is from: 25th Anniversary Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Michelangelo (Toy)
so glad these toys came back. imagine my surprise when i was in toys r us and i saw these figures bearing the exact same card and likeness as the original toys i had when i was a kid.
michelangelo's figure is the exact same slightly off-shade of green he came in all those years ago (as opposed to the darker colors of leo and don and then ralph's vibrant green), and he came with the same dreaded thing he came with 25 years ago: a punch-out bracket you have to break his weapons out of, all the same dull shade of dull orange. This also means his nunchuckus are the same two thick pieces of plastic connected by a slim, slightly flexible piece of plastic. I dont remember mine breaking, but i took great care of it. I can imagine his nunchuckus broke very easily, especially if you tried to stow his weapons in his back holsters (would cause a severe bend in the "chain" on his nunchuckus). I never really understood the other weapons the turtles came with...ninja stars, daggers with strange hilts, a hooking weapon of some sort... also, my michelangelo comes with a dvd..it looks like Hot Rodding Teens from dimension x...which features the nutrino kids. Compared to the 2003 release of the ninja turtles figures where the figures were made to have a more detailed likeness, i think the re release is better. his nunchuckus had a stronger plastic and purposely came with the chain at an angle to reduce breaking. also, the weapons were painted. and the figure just sported slightly better detail. the only aspects i disliked of the re release were the "excess bandana" just aft of the tie...on the re releases they have a "blowing in the wind" effect, wherease these originals and 25 year anniversery figures just have a tight knot with no slack. also unsure of how i feel about the 2003 turtles sporting "worn" looking knee pads (these originals have their bandana color matching their elbow and knee pads). The other ones are also bigger, so they will not work as well with the 25th anniversery turtle van, or if you are a fanatic like me, the vintage technodrome, sewer playset, turtle blimp or any other turtle vehicle/playset. you just cant beat the originals, even if the 2003 editions look better!
