More About the Author

Leslie S. Klinger is considered to be one of the world's foremost authorities on those twin icons of the Victorian era, Sherlock Holmes and Dracula. He is the editor of the three-volume collection of the short stories and novels, THE NEW ANNOTATED SHERLOCK HOLMES, published by W. W. Norton in 2004 and 2005, winner of the Edgar Award for Best Critical/Biographical Work and nominated for every other major award in the mystery genre. THE NEW ANNOTATED DRACULA, published by W. W. Norton in 2008, offers a similar in-depth examination of Bram Stoker's haunting classic and its historical context. It received a starred review in Publishers' Weekly.

Since the 1960s, the study of the rich fantastic literature of the Victorian writers has been Klinger's consuming passion. He has written dozens of articles on Sherlockiana, published 20 books on Sherlock Holmes in addition to the Norton work, and regularly teaches UCLA Extension courses on "Sherlock Holmes and His World" and "Dracula and His World." Klinger's Sherlock Holmes Reference Library has been called by the Baker Street Journal "the standard text of reference for all serious Sherlockians." He contributed essays to Playboy Magazine and the Times of London on vampires and served as the technical adviser for Warner Bros. on the "Sherlock Holmes" films starring Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law. He has edited several anthologies of stories relating to Holmes, vampires, and Victorian fiction, including "In the Shadow of Dracula" and "In the Shadow of Sherlock Holmes" for IDW Books. The first of the four-volume "The Annotated Sandman" in collaboration with Neil Gaiman for DC Comics appeared in January 2012; the next volume will appear in October 2012. He is also working on "The New Annotated H. P. Lovecraft" for W.W. Norton, to appear in 2014.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Klinger received an AB in English from the University of California, Berkeley, followed by a JD from Boalt Hall (School of Law, U.C. Berkeley). Since then, he has lived in Los Angeles, pursuing a legal career in tax, estate, and business planning. Klinger is a member of the Baker Street Irregulars, the Horror Writers Association, and the Mystery Writers of America. He served for three years as the chapter president of the SoCal Chapter of MWA and on its National Board of Directors, and he is the Treasurer of the Horror Writers Association.

You'll see that "annotation" more that any other in both this volume and the preceding one. I'm astounded that there were barely any worthwhile annotations to be found in this. On many pages there simply were no annotations at all, sadly. And again, this mirrors the previous volume. Why even publish such a thing if you have no worthwhile bonus material to fill it with? Oh wait - DC wants to make money. Forgot about that. Plus the notes contained will reference events and characters yet to come so if you're new to the series you'll be spoiled/ruined with some of the upcoming plotlines. Part of the joy in reading is discovering things on your own and Gaiman did a terrific job setting up the prodigal/missing brother who abandoned his realm. I won't ruin him, as opposed to this sloppy annotater.

As to the actual contents, this edition contains my all-time favorite Sandman story arc with Season of Mists but it also contains my least favorite A Game of You. Gaiman's writing is top-notch for the series as ever but there simply isn't enough new information contained herein.

I'd recommend these annotated editions for die-hard fans only who are already familiar with the story. I myself am buying these simply so I don't wear out my Absolutes. I'd recommend the Absolute editions over this any day of the week if you have the money as they're oversized in full color and contain extra content such as scripts and whatnot. Or if you wish to wait it appears there are Sandman Omnibus editions coming out as well. Keep in mind these annotated editions are in black and white only.

All in all four stars for the story arcs and zero for the actual annotations - I guess that averages out to two stars overall, barely. Just a sloppy annotation job again overall, sadly. The Sandman series, still to date my favorite comic series ever, deserves far better than this.

I bought the first volume mainly as a Sandman fan/completist but found it very engrossing. There is some behind-the-production info along with historical/literary perspective on the concepts and tropes Gaiman uses. Beautiful covers are a bonus.

Great book and I just love the notes.
Wish it was in color (no idea if the originals were or not).

The book was a gift for a close friend who is a big fan of Neil Gaiman's works. I got him Vol. 1 already, and, like that volume, I think he really loves it!
