Book Description

"Annotations: a guide to the independent critical press" is a unique directory designed to enable librarians, activists, writers, editors, reporters, and philanthropic organizations to locate and identify progressive, independent magazines and newspapers.

With a smart design and even smarter indexability, the guide puts a wealth of information about normally hard-to-find publications at your fingertips.

Contributors include Les Wade and Charles D'Adamo of the Alternative Press Center, and Beth Schulman and Robert Rosenthal of the Independent Press Association. Forward is by James Weinstein, founding publisher of In These Times magazine.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This second, updated edition of Annotations catalogs 328 leftist and progressive periodicals that, in 1998, were either indexed in the Alternative Press Index or published by members of the Independent Press Association. Included are relatively large-circulation periodicals like the Nation and Mother Jones, but most of the entries are for small-circulation periodicals like Infusion and Social Anarchism. Because very few libraries own the 1996 edition, this reviewer was not able to compare the two editions. This one is certainly more current than the unannotated Progressive Periodicals Directory, published in 1982. The volume includes a good subject index and a "Full Text Availability" section to help patrons identify titles that may already be available through sources like NEXIS, Uncover, or IAC Insite. An excellent, in-depth tool, this would serve as a tremendous collection-development aid to libraries wishing to strengthen their progressive reference holdings.APeter A. Dollard, Alma Coll. Lib., MI

Review

"In an era of one-newspaper cities and with a political system that avoids rather than enlivens issues, Annotations -- a Guide to the Independent Critical Press opens the doors to a wonderful cornucopia of publications that make it their business to take up the new, the innovative and, most of all, the controversial. Anyone who wants relief from the bland or trivial offerings of daily newspapers and television will find in this guide a diverse group of periodicals that revive the kind of public policy debates which have been so important in bringing about social and economic change. [Annotations] provides hard evidence that there is still a brand of journalism alive that is willing to take on controversial, entrenched power, including corporate power, for an open public debate about the issues that affect people -- proof that there is much more beyond the soft ice cream ladled out by the mainstream corporate press." -- Ralph Nader, consumer activist, 6/99

5.0 out of 5 stars A necessary, well-conceived antidote to media monopoly, September 24, 1999

This review is from: Annotations: a guide to the independent critical press (Paperback)
This directory does a terrific job exploring and exposing the diverse choices that exist outside of the mainstream magazine and newspaper world. The book seems to have been designed to appeal to a number of serious "professional" researchers -- librarians, booksellers, editors, writers, activists, even philanthropists. At the same time, its simple and elegant design makes Annotations an enjoyable, accessible way to learn about new independent voices. Sadly, it's one of the few resources the public can turn to for non-corporate opinion. But that just makes it all the more valuable....
