For beginning gardeners just discovering the world of annuals, this book takes you by the hand and guides you from preparing the soil to planting a spectacular show of annuals. It does everything short of buying the seed and sticking the plants into the ground. The bulk of the book is the usual plant encyclopedia with color photos, but the first few chapters are what make this book especially useful. Here are watercolor paintings of annual gardens created from seed sown directly into the ground. The author explains how to mark out the bed, sow the seed, thin, and care for the seedlings. There is nothing modest or simple about these gardens, but the instructions are so painstaking as to help even less-experienced gardeners transform their garden in a single season with the plentiful use of annuals. You'll be itching to dig up some lawn area and embark upon one of these projects immediately--probably the one that includes sunflowers, cosmos, shirley poppies, bells of Ireland, lavatera, and larkspur among the 27 different flowers in one gorgeous garden. --Valerie Easton

Bennett and Forsyth have written a wonderful book that combines the beautiful with the practical. Unlike many authors who rhapsodize about impossible to grow flowers, the authors are very specific about the ease or difficulty of each type of annual. They are very specific about germination practices and times, bloom times, and the pluses and minuses of each plant. I learned how to sucessfully grow annuals that I had tried to grow two or three times without results. For many, there were detailed instructions for how to geerminate from seed both indoors and outdoors, as well as instructions on which plants to deadhead, and how (a topic often unmentioned, greatly shortening bloom times). The photos are gorgeous, and the authors are particularly gifted at picking annuals that are a little unusual, easy to grow and long lasting (agrostemmas, for example). I strongly recommend it.
