The six essays, which span decades, range from the transculturation of Spanish and African roots into the "Afro-Cuban jazz" of the Forties to the vocal stylizations of Billie Holiday and Betty Carter to bebop pioneer Charlie Christian's career. Mitch Seidel's photo gallery (including shots of Oscar Peterson, Charlie Rouse, Gil Evans, and Sonny Rollins) is a refreshing break from this sometimes grueling text; his mainly solo sentimental shots will stir hearts and minds. Four books published in 1991 and 1992 are also reviewed here, including series that fill gaps on instrumentalists like flutists. The book concludes with biographies of four editors and ten contributors followed by a brief background on the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University.
