Book Description

For Dummies January 27, 1998
Known for their brilliant colors, absolutely charming nature, and tragically short life -- well, not so tragic really! -- annuals do have a shorter life span than their fellow perennials, but they also are some of the easiest and most versatile flowers to grow.

In Annuals For Dummies, Bill Marken and the National Gardening Association editors give you the know-how to get your garden blooming in no time. You'll find friendly and expert advice about

  • Selecting the right annuals for your climate
  • Dealing with those pesky pests that love your annuals as much as you do
  • Designing a garden no matter how large or small a space you may have
  • Growing annuals when you have less-than-sunny conditions
  • Discovering tips for tilling the soil and organic gardening
  • Finding online gardening information and the best mail-order resources for gardeners

As an added bonus, Annuals For Dummies also features more than 100 beautiful color photographs of annuals from African Daisies to Zinnias and contains suggestions for spectacular color combinations and beautiful garden designs.

Amazon.com Review

Looking to expand the range of blooms in your garden, but aren't sure where to start--and don't have the best track record for healthy houseplants? Annuals for Dummies answers plant-care questions and supplies a huge range of choices--and you don't have to know the Latin name for your favorite flowers to learn more about them. Planting zones are explained in detail, whether you live in a lowland marsh, a high-altitude desert, or the very middle of the Midwest, and growing conditions are outlined so they make sense for novices. There are month-by-month calendars--you'll never forget to start seeds in March or fertilize in July--and you'll even understand why you're doing it. Plant choices cover the 10 most popular choices (zinnias, sunflowers) in one chapter, while more exotics (bells of Ireland) are covered in another. Thorough instructions are provided for each type--you'll know right away whether the size, color, and temperature requirements make it a good choice for your garden.

The big downside to this book is its lack of pictures. There are lots of line drawings, but they tend to show particular stages of a process, rather than each step. Color photos are limited to one section, and since the photos are quite separate from the descriptions, they don't add much value to the book. With bullet-point lists, icons for highlighting categories like ecofriendly or timesaving, and simple tables and charts, how-to photos aren't essential. For folks who learn best with straightforward reading, the presentation won't be an issue, but if pictorial aids are what you need for learning, look elsewhere. --Jill Lightner

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for beginners, April 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Annuals for Dummies (Paperback)
I loved this book! I have my first garden this year, and since I rent, I can only plant annuals. This book has tons of information about what types of plants to choose, and the different heights, several garden plans and further resources. The only thing I didn't like about it, was there was no real zoning information, except very general. Some of the plants may not grow in my area that are suggested in the book, according to a local garden center.

5.0 out of 5 stars There is a lot more to this book than what meets the eye., December 31, 2000
This review is from: Annuals for Dummies (Paperback)
This book covers what to grow, where to grow and how to grow. There are color pictures in the middle to entice and encourage you. You get good tips on how to handle pests and pets (they are different). Different types of soil and drainage are covered. You get garden layout plans and containers for those of us that want to move the plants around a lot.
This book does too good of a job. I was counting of a good number of the plants dying so I could try new ones. However these animals just keep coming back even after freezes. I also have a simple system for Morning glories; toss the seeds over the fence.
