5.0 out of 5 stars From Poland with November 20, 2009
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
After too many delays, the new album by the Vandermark 5 is finally available for downloading. That's fortunate, because this lineup is too good to withhold to an exclusively Polish audience (the label Not Two is based in Poland and that seems to be where the CD is stocked).

Dave Rempis can match Ken Vandermark's playing superbly, I love how Fred Lonberg-Holm's cello can get distorted and scratchy at a moment's notice, and watching Tim Daisey play can be just nuts. And it would be a mistake for me not to mention Kent Kessler, who holds things down just as well as any bassist with whom Vandermark has played.

And if you've heard an album by the Vandermark 5 before (if you're reading this, you most likely have), then you know that Ken doesn't go with the formula of his elders when it comes to composition. For example, "Speil" gets things started with bass, drum and cello interplay...for the first two and a half minutes. Not the safest way to start an album, but I doubt these guys care. Tim Daisy takes even more time than that getting "Cement" rolling, but the groove that kicks in at 3:45 is pretty worth it. "Cadmium Orange," written in dedication to Francis Bacon, begins more abstractly than anything Bacon would have painted but somehow arrives at an even fiercer groove than its predecessor. Man, how does this stuff get here?

From Ken's head, yeah, I know. But how did it get there?

4.0 out of 5 stars Crunchy Vandermark February 7, 2010
Format:Audio CD
"Annular Gift" is a CD, recorded live, of all new material. Keeping the same lineup, the biggest change is that cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm is getting a very distorted, crunchy sound on the cello. The six long songs are all in the Vandermark style -- catchy riffs and aggressive sections mixed with free sections. A long 74-minute album, it lags in spots, but the group reels you back before too long. Tim Daisy takes a long and very good drum solo on "Cadmium Orange". This has to be in the top 5 of Vandermark 5 discs, and is highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars What the critics say May 25, 2011
By Diginet
Format:MP3 Music
Multi-instrumentalist, composer, and bandleader Ken Vandermark has led his flagship ensemble, the Vandermark 5, through a decade's worth of personnel changes. Despite the band's rotating roster, the ensemble's sound has remained remarkably consistent. A powerhouse unit capable of serene delicacy as well as unfettered intensity, the quintet has won a legion of fans the world over for its uncompromising vision of contemporary creative improvised music.
(Troy Collins, All About Jazz)
***
This is one of the finest working groups in jazz and their commitment to musical adventure remains as true today as ever. The dedications of the compositions seem to really inspire Vandermark and his companions to make thrilling and very enjoyable music.

Oh my, that price
It's not discontinued by manufacturer it's just not available from Amazon.

I suspect that it's really a 2-disc set -- it's a live concert recording from Krakow, Poland, released by the Krakow-based Not Two records.

I checked, and it's not yet available from the Jazz Loft or Downtown Music... Read More
