5.0 out of 5 stars He's back!, May 21, 2010
By
This review is from: Anomaly (Audio CD)
This recording was a welcome surprise. Lenny has not played like this since the seventies. This is a powerful fusion album with it's heart as much in P-Funk and Miles as it is RTF. This album is funky, rocking and just plain terrific. The female vocals on two tracks don't quite fit, the rest are instrumentals with the exception of the last track which has a brief spoken word intro. It's great to hear some of his old band mates from Astral Pirates return. Stanley Clarke plays on one track and Victor Bailey sits in on a number of others. This is just plain terrific. Here's hoping he stays committed to playing fusion again. He has been missed! Highly recommended.-Simon

4.0 out of 5 stars Eclectic album from drumming legend Lenny White!, July 3, 2010

Lenny White is the legendary drummer from the awesome jazz rock fusion band Return To Forever and this is his new solo album filled with an eclectic collection of songs showcasing both his talent and that of his group of awesome musicians. The album opens up with "Drum Boogie" which has an intense groove and awesome syncopated drumming. This song sets a high standard and leads nicely into the heavy riff of "We Know" with some great fills and a nice melody on top. From here the album goes all over the place in musical styles with songs like "Coming Down" which has a Prince vibe, the funky and soulful "Forever", and the progressive groove of "Gazelle" and "Election Day". Only two songs have vocals so this is definitely one for the instrumental fans. I enjoyed the way the album was very progressive and technical yet still musical with nice catchy grooves and melodies. The crisp production and excellent mixing is also a highlight. A very solid album overall and highly recommended to fans of quality modern fusion like CAB and of course Return To Forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars STILL GOT IT!, August 22, 2010

I was at the Iridium Jazz Club and got to hear some of this music live. I hadn't seen Lenny since the Return To Forever reunion tour a few years back.
It's a joy to have Lenny back as a leader. I know Lenny has done a lot of things but if all he ever did was the RTF stuff he would still have my
undying respect. This a an excellent CD and as I heard for myself the music goes over very well onstage. If you're a Lenny White fan then I know I'm
preaching to the choir. Welcome back Lenny!

I never write reviews on websites. I was compelled while listing to Lenny's latest album to try to express how happy I am that a true fusion legend has brought back the exciting feeling !! When you listen to this album you will get the same feelings as when you heard Romantic warrior for the first time or David sancious or Bruford's One of a kind or Alan Holdsworths IOU. Yes I really mean this guys. Its as if the clock turned back to 1978... This is it guys. I hope all the Fusion Godfathers take notice and realize there is a huge market out there for original Jazz fusion music. We will buy this music! You never know, John Mclaughlin might state the Mahavishnu Orchestra is back !!! Yes many people are still out here waiting for this exact type of music. I will do whatever is necessary to spread the word. This is it guys the return of true fusion music !!

What a pleasant surprise. It's a modern take from one of the fusion pioneers. Lenny is just playing wonderfully these days. Lots of great playing on this album. A great variety of tunes. And a consistent high level of musician ship. An easy 5 star rating.

This CD was excellent!! Lenny has some excellent guests artists on this album and he brought it all together with stellar drum work. The cuts on this album range from funky to soulful to totally electric. A must have for any one who appreciates the classic fusion from the early to late seventies!!!!!

Great, hard rocking fusion fest by former return to forever drummer. I didn't think they made them
like this anymore! I've been listening to lenny for over thirty years, and this is right up there
with Venusian summer, Astral pirates,Streamline. A who's who of fusion's best players. At 61 years
young he's still jamming!!!

Just finished listening to Lenny White's new cd "Anamoly", it's great! A combination of jazz-rock fusion mixed with a little R&B on two jams, this cd cooks! No need to go into detail about Lenny White's musical genius, from his days with Chick Corea and the Romantic Warrior period and his outstanding albums Venusian Summer and Astral Pirates, this is a must own for fans of Lenny White and great music!

4.0 out of 5 stars This Is No Anomaly!, September 28, 2010

Excellent rock, funk, fusion collection from the great Lenny White.
Most of the other reviews have got this one right, so I'll only add one additional comment.
Those that are calling this a return to form, or his best in 30 years have been missing out.
White's last studio recording "Edge" from 1999, is easily as good as this cd and for my money, even better.
I think both are must buys, but if I had to have just one (and luckily, I don't) I'd choose "Edge".
That proves this cd is no "Anomaly". White's been doing this for a long time and hopefully, for many years to come!
