Book Description

November 16, 2006

In 1972, gambling is on the horizon for Atlantic City. Joey “the Gimp” Giampietro, a fortyish Mafioso in the Vecchio Crime Family of Philadelphia, and Johnny “GaGa” Bellino from New York, have plans-big plans-to get themselves a piece of the action. Bellino’s plan was simple. The Gimp made it complex.

Amid the bustling streets of South Philadelphia the Gimp slips in and out of a revengeful psychotic funk. The abandonment by his mother at a young-age left the Gimp vulnerable to the abuse of his foster father-an original capo in the Vecchio Crime Family. In an attempt to settle old scores first, the Gimp never contemplates the rippling effect that his actions could have on his life. Finally, his double-dealing quest for satisfaction backfires into a fight for survival. As more and more people become entangled in the web of the criminal subculture perpetuated by the Gimp and his gang, many contemplate killing this fearsome rogue Mafioso. The most unlikely one will succeed.

Inevitably everyone who falls prey to the Gimp’s contrivances is forced to seek resolution in the labyrinth of his or her conflicted lives. Some find sorrow and pain. Others find hope and love. A few find tragic death. The lucky ones get another chance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intrigue and suspense wrapped in a Philly Cheese Steak, January 7, 2007

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Another Chance: Tales of South Philadelphia (Paperback)
If you know anything about South Phila., or grew up in a neighborhood city like Chicago, St. Louis, New York ,L.A. or San Francisco.
This is a book for you.
Mr. Biello captures the very essence of a local neighborhood.
You can smell the wood burning in the 55 gallon drums on 9th Street and the cheese hanging from the rafters in the Italian market.
For many it will bring back heartfelt memories.
Particularly if you grew up in the 60's -80's,or if you are a Rocky(the movies),fan.
The author manages to give you a vivid insight of this neighborhood to bring you into the book, he then takes you on an odyssey that will have you turning pages like an addicted James Patterson fan.
Good storyline and style.. Very lifelike.
Although it could have had a bit more editing , some words too repetitive others out of context.
That aside a very, very good read, I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Really a Gangster Tale, September 4, 2007
This review is from: Another Chance: Tales of South Philadelphia (Paperback)
This book is a snapshot view of life in South Philadelphia. It's realistic right down to the streets and accents and captures the mindset of this microcosmic world circa 1972. A great read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Bruce Goodwin - Frequent Flyer/Frequent Reader, January 25, 2007

This review is from: Another Chance: Tales of South Philadelphia (Paperback)
I am not a reviewer...I just like good stories. I look for great reads to mitigate the stress of frequent travel. "Another Chance" is a terrific book. Mr. Biello did a great job developing his characters and putting the reader in the heart of South Philadelphia. It reminded me of my Baltimore roots.

I could see the tight streets and the row houses...the stores with apartments above...the ethnic neighborhoods. There were characters that I grew to identify with and those that I loathed.

I could tell that this may be the author's first published novel due to some overuse of some adjectives, but because he did such a great job developing his charaters, I quickly forgot about this minor issue.

Enjoy it....I did.

Bruce Goodwin
