Divine Music, March 26, 2004
In Feb 2000, Joni Mitchell told the LA Times what she thought of music today: "I think it is in a horrible state. I don't even think of it as music anymore, but just the 'ic' business. It's 'icky' because the 'muse' has gone out of it. The divinity that it once contained is gone. Part of it is the capitalistic feeding frenzy."But along comes Lene Marlin, a young Norwegian angel who brings divinity, muse & a reinvigorating breath of fresh air to pop music. Her music has both a modern quality reflecting the complexity of life today, and the old-fashioned fundamentals in excellent vocals, beautiful guitar, drums & other instruments. English is probably not Lene's first language, and her lyrics are simple - but exquisitely so, especially when delivered in her amazingly sweet, gentle voice. Yet the simplicity of the words often hides a tremendous ambivalence. On 'My Love', she implores: "Please, come and find me, my love I'm ready now, to come home Please, come and find me, my love Let's leave this place, let's leave no trace" On 'Disguise', she speaks to many people with: "Have you ever felt some kind of emptiness inside You will never measure up, to those people you Must be strong, can't show them that you're weak Have you ever told someone something That's far from the truth Let them know that you're okay Just to make them stop All the wondering, and questions they may have" I have no hesitation giving this album 5 stars, but I have to give this DISCLAIMER: 'Another Day', like her debut album, has more than a tinge of sadness throughout, either in word or in sound. But you know it's a special artist who can sing happy words in a sad way ('From This Day') and sad words in an uplifting way ('Disguise'). She also deals with the topic of death, as she did on her debut album. The song is 'Story', which is about suicide and hits so close to home for many people who bear a secret pain. "Tell them please, how could they know Hurts inside, no scars to show You played the lead, and never once you failed And the place from where you watch us now Hope you've found your peace somehow, Peace somehow" Through all the darkness, Lene's voice remains unremittingly loving and compassionate as well - a very special album to ponder during the day or soothe you at night.
