perfect little melancholy pop songs,
This review is from: Another Day (Audio CD)
Pure, melodic, non-juvenile pop is a dying art. Pop doesn't have to be Britney and Justin. It used to be Dusty and the Carpenters and, for the better part of their career the Beatles. Among the few who carry the banner today is Norske girl Lene Marlin.
Put aside the jokes about someone from Norway being named Marlin: This young lady writes perfect little melancholy pop songs. Some will win you over immediately like Sorry and some will take a while like Faces, but they will all get there. Anyone who reaches this level at such a young age has the potential to become something special. Potential aside, she's already quite good. This album has absolutely no filler (Her debut , Playing My Game, had a little) and the lyrics are more refined and poignant to the point that they remind me of songwriters like Carole King or Roberta Plack. In short- if you like pop, melody or soft words, you will like this album. If you like artists like Krezip or Crowded House or David Gray or the Jayhawks you will like this album. If you have a heart or a pair of ears you will like this album.

This album is worth the price just for the song "My love".Its constructed simply,Lenes voice carrying the song, you cannot miss the emotion, shut your eyes and feel what it is like to be humaan and alive. If this song is worth 5 stars the rest of the album is 4.9! Others have said this before me,but the rubbish being released by the record companies today almost made me give up buying music, this album has restored my faith, this is honest music.

i've been lene marlin's fane since her first album, and i was really looking forward to her second album. it was a long wait but it was worth it!! after listening to it, i think that it is the best album i heard in a very long time it is even better than her first (which was also amazing) her lyrics are so beautifull and soft she has a way of reaching out and bring you in to her world. lene writes all the music herself.i recomend this album to anyone who loves beautifull lyrics with great soft melodies to match!

Divine Music,
By Steven Ooi (Singapore) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Another Day (Audio CD)
In Feb 2000, Joni Mitchell told the LA Times what she thought of music today:"I think it is in a horrible state. I don't even think of it as music anymore, but just the 'ic' business. It's 'icky' because the 'muse' has gone out of it. The divinity that it once contained is gone. Part of it is the capitalistic feeding frenzy." But along comes Lene Marlin, a young Norwegian angel who brings divinity, muse & a reinvigorating breath of fresh air to pop music. Her music has both a modern quality reflecting the complexity of life today, and the old-fashioned fundamentals in excellent vocals, beautiful guitar, drums & other instruments. English is probably not Lene's first language, and her lyrics are simple - but exquisitely so, especially when delivered in her amazingly sweet, gentle voice. Yet the simplicity of the words often hides a tremendous ambivalence. On 'My Love', she implores: On 'Disguise', she speaks to many people with: "Have you ever felt some kind of emptiness inside I have no hesitation giving this album 5 stars, but I have to give this She also deals with the topic of death, as she did on her debut album. The song is 'Story', which is about suicide and hits so close to home for many people who bear a secret pain. "Tell them please, how could they know Through all the darkness, Lene's voice remains unremittingly loving and compassionate as well - a very special album to ponder during the day or soothe you at night.

You cant avoid feel touched by Lene,

Is so big the amount of inspiration , melancholy and beauty this Nordic singer/songwritter provides to every one of her creations that you gonna feel overwhelmed by this amazing sounds, both her voice and the music are plenty of incredible colors, mostly grey atmospheres are evident but in a precious way, cuts such as "faces" , "another day", "my love" (good one), "you werent there" seems to perfectly picture in your mind the frozen air of Norway and some sort of pretty sadness that is enjoyable for the listener , simple instrumentation but melodic and poetic lyrics are the main components for Lenes music
great album HM

when you listen to lene marlin you feel her voice inside your heart. she has a unique way to impact your feelings. you need to start with "playing my game" to realise that, which is one of the few albums I treasure.
I feel "Another day" is part two of "PMG".. somewhere i can find similarity between one song to another. my most fav songs from this album are "Faces"(!!!),"sorry" and off course "another day".

I don't have her debut album yet. Actually, i went to the record store to buy that one, but couldn't find it so i got 'Another day' instead. I'm so glad i did because it's the best album i have. The songs get better and better every time you hear them, you don't get sick of them. I've had it for a month and i still listen to every day. They are all quite sad, but very beautiful. I'm not going pick any songs out, because they are all good, every single one of them.I was a bit annoyed though, when i found out there's another version with a bonus track. I payed £16.99 for this album which is a lot since most albums are usually £11.99 and then i find out there's a track missing! i had to download it and the quality of the download was not very good either. I don't know why she would not have included 'enough' in all the cds. Anyway, i would reccoment buying the version with the bonus track.

GREAT NEW ALBUM FROM LENE MARLIN !,
By A Customer
This review is from: Another Day (Audio CD)
To say it simple this is a very good album, even better than her debut album Playing my game from 1999. The style of the album is very much the same as Playing, with slow moody songs and some uptempo songs.Lene have written all the songs herself and even plays the guitar on some of them. A lot of the songs is about personal experiences from her own life and are kind of sad to listen to. All the songs are very good, my favourites are SORRY, FIGHT AGAINST THE HOURS, FACES and the beautiful MY LOVE, which I think is the best song on the album. Lenes beautiful voice and writing skills make for quality music that grows on you every time you listen to it. If you like real music with lyrics that just don`t pass trough your head but stays there, BUY this album now, you will not regret it.

It's distinctly different to "Playing My Game"; it still has her wonderful voice, but has a more polished or professional air to it. PMG always makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck, not in a scary freaky way, but in that 'someone running their finger down your spine' kinda way... There is a lot of emotion in PMG, and there's a magnetic quality how it has just the right mix of folk, rock, pop, and raw talent versus perfection. PMG is, IMO, a very subtly powerful album emotionally. "Another Day" has perhaps more emphasis on the 'perfection' or 'polish' of the presentation - that's not necessarily a bad thing, and it is a wonderful album to listen to (but it doesn't quite have that same depth of feeling that PMG does). However Lene's voice is as magnificent as previously, but perhaps a little more restrained than PMG. Musically I think it has a more professional sound to it, but with glimpses of that raw fresh sound on PMG. It's a great album, but with more emphasis on that quality, that polish/perfection perhaps rather than raw emotion. I like it and have even bought the Music Video DVD of the album.
To sum up, like many artist's "second album's" I do feel there's a sense of needing to sound professional to justify the faith of the fans, etc, who made the first album a success, and hence an unconscious restraint to ensure the quality. BUT it's not as pronounced as with other artists and it's still a very good album with it's own sound. I suspect it may grow on me more with a couple more listens! If I had to rate the two albums side by side I would give "Playing My Game" 5 out of 5 Stars, and "Another Day" 4.5 out of 5 Stars (I've given it the full 5 here on Amazon). Two great albums by a great female musician & vocalist that I would recommend to all. If you really liked Lene on PMG, you really have to have this album.

I've loved Lene Marlin since her first album, only one song of which I've ever heard in Australia. I somehow lost the disc from its box and while I was ordering a replacement I came across a reference to a DVD made in 2003. I download a few of the clips on you tube and thought they were sensational. I got the disc and sat entranced as it played. The camera work is lovely and the quality is superb. I never tire of listening to Lene's voice. A+++
