Gr 2-4--Anyone who reads this biography can't miss the two lessons: Abraham Lincoln was honest; also, he worked hard and never gave up. Not content to let incidents of his subject's life speak for themselves, Uglow states these themes repeatedly. However, the didactic tone is not the only problem here. The plodding style renders even potentially exciting incidents lifeless. James's static, cartoon drawings do nothing to relieve the prevailing sense of boredom. No wonder students complain about history being dull. The essential facts about Lincoln's early life and political career are here, but the book ends abruptly with the victory celebration after Lee's surrender. Lincoln's assassination is mentioned only in an endnote. Cheryl Harness's Abe Lincoln Goes to Washington (National Geographic, 1996) and Young Abe Lincoln (S & S, 1996) are fresher, better illustrated, and far more informative.
