5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Be Fooled - These Girls ROCK!
OK, I have to admit that I am shocked and awed. Or at least shocked and odd. I'm one of those people who, until recently, had never heard of BarlowGirl before. And then when I saw a picture of the band I just knew that they were another CCCC (cookie-cutter contemporary Christian) girl group. And yes, they are a girl group - made up of three sisters named Barlow (duh). But...

3.0 out of 5 stars It has its moments...
I like BarlowGirl, but I really don't love this album as a whole. I do love I Need You To Love Me, Porceline Heart (love this one!), the acoustic version of Never Alone, and Thoughts of You, and the vocals are (of course) amazing, but otherwise I'm not a big fan. My initial response to this album is, 50% fantastic, 50% okay. Hence, three stars.

But they are not CCCC. These girls ROCK.

Another Journal Entry is noteworthy from the first chord to the last. Outstanding musicianship, talent, harmonies that can only be accomplished by siblings, and good writing.

The first two songs on the CD, Grey and Let Go, set a high standard for edgy Christian rock. Although this band carries a fair amount of originality, I am reminded from time to time of Evanescence and the Cranberries.

In addition to the great rock tunes, there are a selection of really memorable ballads on this album, too, that showcase some extraordinary vocal abilities. I especially like Enough and Porcelain Heart.

My recommendation: Don't be fooled by their looks, this is a good band playing good music. Get the CD. You'll thank me. When you're not listening to it, you'll be humming it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even my little girl loves these chicas!, June 10, 2006
This review is from: Another Journal Entry (Audio CD)
Both my kids love this record and other songs by them. Not just for teens. These girls are amazing to see live and they do a great praise and worship. Buy as alternative music for your teenage grand daughter or child, they will love it. Their topics are real and speak at times with a contrite spirit. I first fell in love with them with the song Never Alone.
I need you to love me is the song my little girl sings in her hard to understand toddler blabber, she amazes me how much she likes this song, I love it too.

Enjoy

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful...you'll want this CD!, June 3, 2006

This review is from: Another Journal Entry (Audio CD)
This is one of the most awesomely composed rock artwork of christian music ever! I really enjoyed it when I listened to this CD.

The three sisters of Barlowgirl (Alyssa, 24, Lauren, 20, Rebecca, 26) play their own rock music! Electric guitar, bass guitar, and drums! They aren't your ordinary "pop-star girls"!

Make sure to listen to the music clips on here, so you can decide, also. Just a suggestion.

I love each song in it's own way, but my favorites would have to be:
Let Go, Porcelain Heart, My God's Enough, Take Me Away, Grey, Never Alone (acoustic version), 5 Minutes of Fame, Enough....

(It's hard to list them in my favorites order, because they practically all rank so high...!)

I had anticipated the release of this album for a long time before it was in stores, though. But even though I had worn out the clips I heard, and was excited, I wasn't even knowing the fullness of this CD!! It has a lot of good melodies to it, depth, and great lyircs! Barlowgirl has always had great music, and it's surprising that this is their second album, with such a composed sound!

Also, this CD has led me and inspired me to seek and trust in God more, "letting go" and giving what I have to Him. The Barlows speak of God in a way that everyone can understand and grow into a deeper and more growing life.

In another aspect, this CD has a variety of musical styles, generally rock-influenced, though. Usually the rock-cranking songs are very cool, but they have strange aspects, like roughness, perhaps violent mentionings, or confusing lyrics that certainly aren't talking about God.

This is a different case. They don't have strange topics, or questionable lyrical content. They are clear in what they say, though contemplative, and upliftingly thoughtful. I truly related to this CD better than others I've gotton.

I like how these girls show their light in what they are seeking to live for. "The main thing we focus on as a band and in our ministry, is really just about trusting God." I'm glad they live up to that in this CD!

Overall, all I can say is...I'm blown away! This CD is different than others. Each of their songs provide a different style, a different look at something.

So anyone who likes either a partly contemporary feel, or just a main great rock edge, this is for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, good and honest Christian rock, April 26, 2006
This review is from: Another Journal Entry (Audio CD)
Like other reviewers here, I am pleasantly surprised that Barlow Girl is NOT another cookie-cutter rock band. Along with their rockin' sound, their lyrics are incredibly honest. This album begins with questions that most Christians think about at some point ("I just never saw how You could cherish me"), and follows a journey from heartbreak to praise.

This album is just so positive, it practically speaks for it self! It might just sell itself, too (but I'll give it a little push)! First of all, this is the second album by one of the best-selling Christian all-girl band, Barlowgirl! And second of all, all of the songs are 5/5, but I would like to talk about my three favorite songs:

Let Go - A great song about trusting God with a even bigger situation than you've might've had before (surgery, conquering fears etc.). 5/5

I Need You to Love Me - Another great song that EVERYONE can relate to! It's about a person who is wondering why God loves him/her even though he/she is trying to push away from Him. 5/5

Psalm 73 (My God's Enough) - THE best Christian sing-along ever! I would encourage EVERYBODY to listen and sing along with this one! Todd Agnew's voice is beautiful in this song! A glowing 5/5!

Go out and buy this CD, you won't be disappointed, but rather...moved.

I admit when I first got the cd I wasn't sure if it would be as awesome as their last one and as cool as my friends said it was, but the cd was as good as the last one if not better!! They have some quiet worship songs like "thoughts of you","no one like you","enough",and "need you to love me".All the rest are jammin hit rockin' songs some fav's are "5 min. of fame" and "psalm 73". Trust me, buy it you won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars No Sophomore Slump for These Girls!!, September 29, 2005

Queen of Evil (Washington, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Another Journal Entry (Audio CD)
Its their second album and BarlowGirl are going strong. In fact, I think it's better than their first album. Where /Barlowgirl/ sometimes seemed awkward with some songs where the tune overshadowed the lyrics or vice-versa, /Another Journal Entry/ seems to be much better. It feels more put-together, it rocks harder, and the lyrics are written better. On /Barlowgirl/ the lyrics sometimes seemed awkward (especially on the songs "Clothes" with lyrics like "was this shirt made for me or my doll" and "Average Girl" with the awkwardly straightforward chorus of "no more dating I'm just waiting"). On this album the lyrics inspire without seeming preachy or weird, a feat many christian artists struggle with. Barlowgirl is just as good as many other christian rock artists. I'd reccomend Barlowgirl to anybody who likes Relient K, Superchic[K] or Switchfoot.

Songs:

1) Grey - Good song to start out the CD, very powerful, love it.
2) Let Go - A good, strong song. Seems to slow down in a couple spots, but the chorus picks up.
3) I Need You to Love Me - Oh, what a pretty song. Very moving, beautiful song.
4) Enough - A good solid song. It doesn't stand out very much, and the tune seems a might repetitive to me. To me it seems like filler, but it's good filler.
5) Porcelain Heart - This song brings the tempo down with its beautiful vocals and instruments and lyrics. I love this one so much. Reminds me of some of Evanescence's earlier stuff. This is such a good, emotional song and definitely one of my favorites
6)Take Me Away - I love this song. It seems to come together very well with the instruments, vocals and lyrics. A perfect example of success where their first album failed.
7)Psalm 73 (My God's Enough) - An instant favorite of mine. More Rock-y than the rest of their album. The vocal backup of Todd Agnew is wonderful. This song also has a very evanescencey vibe.
8)5 Minutes of Fame - Good message with this song. Sounds a lot like Superchic[K]'s "Big Star Machine". Lyrics are well complimented by the tune.
9) Thoughts of You - A good ballad-like song. Sweet, but they kind of lose the momentum on this one. The lyrics are very emotional though, which sort of makes up for the loss of momentum
10)No One Like You - A good strong song. Slightly repetitive tune, and it doesn't stand out much. Another song that seems like filler (But very good filler).
11) Never Alone (Acoustic) - This is STILL a good song. It's basically the same as the one on /Barlowgirl/ with only a few changes. And since the original was an awesome song this one is an awesome song.
12) Never Alone (Remix) - Okay, I have to admit, when I first saw "Never Alone (Remix)" I laughed. I figured nobody would ever pull off a remix of Never Alone. Well, I don't much like the start of the song, but once it gets going it's actually very groove-a-licious.

***** 5 Stars!! I highly, highly, reccomend this CD. Go out and get it because it's amazing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not out of my CD rotation..., December 28, 2006
This review is from: Another Journal Entry (Audio CD)
Love, Love, Love this CD!!! My favorite song is "let go," "I need you to love me," and "Enough." If you like pop, you are not going to enjoy this CD because these girls rock! They have very few songs that don't get you on your feet pumping your fist or singing loudly in your car. Barlow girls has another winner and fan in me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love It - And Love Them!, August 14, 2006
This review is from: Another Journal Entry (Audio CD)
What can I add to these excellent reviews? I am a 45-year old divorced father of two daughters, 10 and 7. I want to make sure my kids get exposure to young women with good values. I also want them to appreciate good, edgy, music. I get all of this and more with BarlowGirl. Yes - Evanescence is a good comparison, but as my girls put it, BarlowGirl has better lyrics, meaning - not so dark and dreary.

I took them to see BarlowGirl at KenockeeFest last weekend, and boy was I impressed and amazed. Playing all their own instruments, making such a great sound, rocking the fast numbers and tugging at your heart with the slow! These girls rival any of the great rock acts in my collection, and I have a lot of CDs!

And then when it came time for autographs, they smiled and treated every fan like they were best friends - something else you don't get from the typical Hollywood performer. My girls are still sky-high from the concert!

Thank God for BarlowGirl - and I pray they continue down the straight and narrow, and keep putting out excellent music!

Amazon - Can I give them 6 stars?

This review is from: Another Journal Entry (Audio CD)
This CD has been playing non-stop in my daughters CD player. She has NO idea that they are a christian band and is playing it for her friends who have now run out to buy the CD. I'm shocked that they are not playing on every radio everywhere. I LOVE the fact that they have subtle messages and play good music without being overly christian oriented. KEEP ROCKING BARLOW GIRLS your music is PHENOMINAL!!!
