Funkin it up,
By "el_muerte" (Boston) - See all my reviews

DJ Dan kicks it again, this time with "Another Late Night." The follow-up to his other two Moonshine mixes, "Beats 4 Freaks" and "Funk the System," this set is the best of three in my opinion. Using mostly high-energy tech house and funky house material, this mix has no filler - just one bomb after another. (Please disregard the other review of this CD that claims that the music is trance-oriented, seeing as artists like the Rhythm Masters and Olav Basoski are nothing of the sort) If you like funky house, this is definitely the CD for you. This might be Dan's last CD on Moonshine, so pick it up before his material becomes harder to find.

Dan's 2nd best full length CD,
By Samurai (The Peak of Mt. Fuji) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Another Late Night (Audio CD)
"Another Late Night" falls more into the big beat/breaks classification than Dan's usual "funky tech house" realm, and for that reason I feel as if this particular album (much like Beats4Freaks) lacks the soul I expect to hear in one of his sets. Not to say that it's bad... it's just not what I'm expecting to hear from Dan and it lacks his essential sound. For starters, the whole 73 minutes is spent flawlessly mixing from kickin' track to kickin' track... now as good as this may sound, there's none of his funky lulls, and never any of his carefully crafted dramatic breaks. It just sounds as if he sat down with all his most pounding tracks and spun 'till the needles broke. Now sure this makes for an energetic set, but it also makes for a somewhat repetitive one in that every point on the CD carries the same flow. If I had to make a comparison, I'd say that this album sounds like a cleaner, funkier version of "Beats4Freaks"... only without his usually masterfull "trip engineering". As for singular tracks, the terminally funky Rhythm Masters rexix of Carl Cox's "Dr. Funk" is worth the price of admission alone. Other cool selections are the saxophone overlayed Trevor Rockcliffe remix of Sgt. Slick's "White Treble, Black Bass", and The Mutator's head spinning "Psycho". Oh, and the Rhythm Masters' "Oriental Cyber Phunk" is absolute insanity, and Dan's flawless transition from it to "Dr. Phunk" gets the album's "best mix" award. All in all, DJ Dan's "Another Late Night" is an excellently mixed CD that keeps movin from beginning to end, and I strongly suggest even his mildest fan should have this in their collection. But may the "Dan enthusiast" be warned that it's a far cry from the aural excellence of his legendary "URB Mix 2".

Another 'Funk the System'? I think not, but still,
This review is from: Another Late Night (Audio CD)
I ordered this one because I liked Funk The System that much. But after listening to it, I was disappointed, it's more clubby, less deep. But after the second spin, not remembering the deep tones of Funk The System I started to appreciate this one. It's one of these 'I can play this around people who are not that much into house' kinda CD's.
