4.0 out of 5 stars Funkin it up
DJ Dan kicks it again, this time with "Another Late Night." The follow-up to his other two Moonshine mixes, "Beats 4 Freaks" and "Funk the System," this set is the best of three in my opinion. Using mostly high-energy tech house and funky house material, this mix has no filler - just one bomb after another. (Please disregard the other...

1.0 out of 5 stars Sorry, just not impressed
I got this CD a while ago. I have never been able to listen to it for more than a few minutes. I just don't like the CD. Maybe it's my tastes. If you want to hear some deep, heavy, dark dance beats, don't get this. This has a happier feel than I like, but mostly the songs are just so blah. They are more than blah. I can almost hear my CD player begging me to remove...

Using mostly high-energy tech house and funky house material, this mix has no filler - just one bomb after another. (Please disregard the other review of this CD that claims that the music is trance-oriented, seeing as artists like the Rhythm Masters and Olav Basoski are nothing of the sort) If you like funky house, this is definitely the CD for you. This might be Dan's last CD on Moonshine, so pick it up before his material becomes harder to find.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dan's 2nd best full length CD, April 27, 2000

"Another Late Night" falls more into the big beat/breaks classification than Dan's usual "funky tech house" realm, and for that reason I feel as if this particular album (much like Beats4Freaks) lacks the soul I expect to hear in one of his sets. Not to say that it's bad... it's just not what I'm expecting to hear from Dan and it lacks his essential sound.

For starters, the whole 73 minutes is spent flawlessly mixing from kickin' track to kickin' track... now as good as this may sound, there's none of his funky lulls, and never any of his carefully crafted dramatic breaks. It just sounds as if he sat down with all his most pounding tracks and spun 'till the needles broke. Now sure this makes for an energetic set, but it also makes for a somewhat repetitive one in that every point on the CD carries the same flow. If I had to make a comparison, I'd say that this album sounds like a cleaner, funkier version of "Beats4Freaks"... only without his usually masterfull "trip engineering".

As for singular tracks, the terminally funky Rhythm Masters rexix of Carl Cox's "Dr. Funk" is worth the price of admission alone. Other cool selections are the saxophone overlayed Trevor Rockcliffe remix of Sgt. Slick's "White Treble, Black Bass", and The Mutator's head spinning "Psycho". Oh, and the Rhythm Masters' "Oriental Cyber Phunk" is absolute insanity, and Dan's flawless transition from it to "Dr. Phunk" gets the album's "best mix" award.

All in all, DJ Dan's "Another Late Night" is an excellently mixed CD that keeps movin from beginning to end, and I strongly suggest even his mildest fan should have this in their collection. But may the "Dan enthusiast" be warned that it's a far cry from the aural excellence of his legendary "URB Mix 2".

4.0 out of 5 stars Another 'Funk the System'? I think not, but still, July 26, 2000
This review is from: Another Late Night (Audio CD)
I ordered this one because I liked Funk The System that much. But after listening to it, I was disappointed, it's more clubby, less deep. But after the second spin, not remembering the deep tones of Funk The System I started to appreciate this one. It's one of these 'I can play this around people who are not that much into house' kinda CD's.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Amazon Review is silly, September 8, 2000

Don't get me wrong, this is an excellent CD. It's definitely more of a real mix than his last two Moonshine efforts but it's not trance. It's nice funky house and techno. It's good stuff for that nice sunny Sunday morning drive home. Interesting mixing and a nice selection of tracks make this a pretty good buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stirred..., August 10, 2000
This review is from: Another Late Night (Audio CD)
Not as good as "Funk The System," but good nonetheless. Whereas "Funk The System" goes from funky to techy, here DJ Dan seems to have found a half-way point between that funk and tech and combined it, spreading both evenly over this mix. This is by no means bad -- the tracks are wicked and make me move, but it lacks the surprise that "Funk The System" had with its smooth transition from funk to tech. All in all, recommended (especially if you are already familiar with DJ Dan), but pick up "Funk The System" first.

Anyway... The stand-out tracks are "Dr. Funk", the "Making Me Feel / Rise / Funk Master" mix, and "White Treble, Black Bass." Sadly though, DJ Dan uses CZR's somewhat weak remix of "Rise." It's used well here, but Eddie Amador's track has much better mixes...

5.0 out of 5 stars Bangin' tech-house for the masses..., April 19, 2000

DJ Dan has outdone himself this time. No more cheesy disco house tracks or annoying prog-club garbage. Another Late Night is bumpin' dance music that maintains an incredible energy level throughout the whole mix.Destination's "Defintion of Love" is an incredible track (i have it on vinyl too, it is awesome) Also, CZR's remix of Eddie Amador's "Rise" is a welcome addition to the mix, and this remix is nice for everyone who is sick and tired of the same versions of "Rise" appearing everywhere. All in all, this is a great release for Moonshine - easily one of the best. The production is good, Dan's mixing is great, the track selection is killer ("That Zipper Track" again, though? c'mon! ) definitely pick this one up for summer driving in your pimp ride!

(note to anonymous reviewer/hater: many of the tracks on this cd ARE indeed tech-house. the inclusion of trevor rockliffe tracks and mixes and "definition of love" ALONE warrant THAT distinction. dan himself would agree.)

Not one of his best cd's but still it is some of the best funky house out at the time. DJ Dan is the premier funky house dj in the world in my opinion.

4.0 out of 5 stars The CD that grows on you, November 28, 2004
This review is from: Another Late Night (Audio CD)
Where to start... DJ Dan comes back with a new type of progressive house and Im not sure if I like it!

Till now DJ Dan has been all about funky make you dance all night music. This CD I assume was DJ Dans way of trying something new.

Now Im not saying that the CD is bad, its just not the DJ Dan that we have come to know and love. So if your thinking of purchasing this CD because you want to hear good old dan spin his funk house, then you may want to think about the purchase again. This CD however has grown on me the more times I listen to it.

No, its not just like Beats or Funk the System, but it is hot hot hot and I highly recommend it to people who can discern between mega hard house and trance...haha! thats so funny that someone would actually label Dan as trance....anyway! Buy it!
