I picked this up when I lived in Europe, and I didn't think I would ever hear from Mellow again. This album knocked my socks off, and I'm so glad to see that it is making its way across the pond. A feast for the ears combining delicate rhythm, pulsating beat, catchy pop, kooky sounds, and every trick up pop's proverbial sleeve. Listening to this album, it is obvious that Mellow have spent ample time absorbing the best music pop and electronica have to offer and molded the best elements of each genre into their own very unique sound. This is one of those albums that transforms the space that it is played in, be it a discotheque or your bedroom. The tracks switch from cleverly crafted electronic-influenced pop to highly danceable trip-hop to gentle acoustic-driven ditties. The lyrics are insightful and very memorable in a simple, poetic way, and the carefully-crafted melodies rival anything Air (a band similar in content) has produced. I can recommend this album to fans of Air to fans to Belle and Sebastian to post-modern pop/electronica fans. This album won't leave your CD player for quite some time after it is purchased. I listened to mine practically non-stop for weeks after I first put it in my player. I just hope that Mellow has a long, prolific career ahead of them and don't call it quits any time soon.

Mix equal portions of the psychedelic 60's, vocoders, and French Pop and you get Mellow. Yes they're a bit like Air and not quite as good, but still worth listening.

El ambiente general de este disco es espacial, fluido, melódico, cálido. Esto está conseguido principalmente al modo en que está dada la interpretación, básicamente con ritmos suaves (algunos de programaciones y cajas de ritmos), voces lejanas y bien armonizadas (generalmente tratadas con efectos) y toda suerte de sonidos muy dulces, provenientes de teclados antiguos, loops, strings, tuba, etc. Sin embargo, hay variedad suficiente y dosificación adecuada de dichos elementos, colocados de modo que no sólo remiten a la música de los 60' (a la que constantemente citan) y el lounge, sino también muestran sus aristas más contemporáneas (ligadas un poco al tecno) y originales. La instrumentación, como decía, es muy interesante, y más aún lo son los arreglos, que logran evitar la repetición y el acostumbramiento, haciendo continuas variaciones, metiendo y sacando melodías, acercando o alejando el sonido con filtros, llenándolo de ruidos naturales o artificiales. Las composiciones son de distinta duración: algunas son apenas interludios para otras donde hay un gran desarrollo de las ideas que se quieren mostrar, a través de varias secciones y quiebres. Sin embargo, algunas de estas composiciones son un poco flojas y obvias; éste es el único punto que encuentro un poco bajo. Pero, en promedio, Mellow consigue trasportarnos al estado de ánimo que pretende, dulce y calmante, aunque también deje que fluya la urgencia y cierta angustia oculta.

P.D.: a quienes les guste este disco obviamente les encantará Air, grupo con el cual ha colaborado Patrick Woodcock, de Mellow. Otro artista francés interesante con el que tienen cierta similitud es Kid Loco. También podrían buscar , aunque a mi juicio no son tan buenos, a Tahiti 80 y Salako.
