Book Description

February 10, 2006
“To raise a child while living with cancer is to have your heart break. We have to learn how to live with broken hearts.” So says one of the mothers interviewed in this powerful, inspirational, and deeply moving book, a tapestry of voices from ordinary women coping with every mother’s nightmare: a cancer diagnosis while raising children.

It’s difficult to imagine a group more in need of attention and support than seriously ill mothers. Yet, women confronting the profound collision of mothering and cancer struggle amidst a remarkable absence of services or resources. Another Morning bridges that gap. The stories are interwoven with the author’s personal and professional reflections, drawing on her 25 years as a public health educator specializing in maternal-child health, and her experience as a mother. She explores themes of universal interest and concern for mothers: What can we do to responsibly prepare ourselves and our young for life’s inevitable losses? Can a mother ever be seen as both strong and fallible, as a whole human being?

For mothers and all those who care about them, this book is an invaluable companion and source of comfort, full of insights, guidance, and real-world wisdom.

More About the Author

I've been a writer and public health professional for twenty-five years, specializing in the fields of maternal and child health and community mental health. The abiding passion of my professional and personal life has been mothering'-its value, meaning, challenge and opportunity in contemporary culture. A pervasive theme of my work has been the importance of valuing and caring for the primary caregiver who, in most families, is a woman. In 1995 I founded Mothers' Living Stories, a nonprofit project that brings compassion, dignity, and support in parenting to mothers who have cancer by helping them record their life stories as living legacies. After almost a decade of listening to ill mothers,I wrote Another Morning to bring these women's remarkable stories to a larger audience. In my private practice, I'm a personal historian, public health consultant, and counselor for life transitions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for learning about life, February 23, 2006
By
Bracha (Oakland, Ca.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Another Morning: Voices of Truth and Hope from Mothers with Cancer (Paperback)
I have had the privilege of being a volunteer listener with the Mothers Living Stories Project since its inception. When people ask me if it is depressing to do this work, I look at them with disbelief. In a society that can reduce itself to crass materialism and a need for instant gratification, the relationships that I developed with the mothers that I interviewed have truly been antidotal. I am reminded of what is real and what is possible. I see the indominatable spirit of love. I've learned to understand that death is always a full player in our lives and how we relate to that fact has a great deal to do with the quality of life that we enjoy (or don't). Most importantly, it has allowed me to be helpful to someone who is in need in a very personal manner.
Linda Blachman's book has captured the heart and hope that these mothers demonstrate over and over again. It is written for all of us who want to be reminded of the depths of the human heart and the fullness of love that we are designed to experience.
It is inspiring and brilliantly conceived and written.

5.0 out of 5 stars To Life!, February 10, 2006

This review is from: Another Morning: Voices of Truth and Hope from Mothers with Cancer (Paperback)
Linda Blachman's finely crafted storytelling -- and the lives of the mothers whose stories she shares -- taught me more about my own life than I had dreamed would be possible. I found myself moved to tears, again and again -- tears
of joy and gratitude as often as tears of sympathy and compassion. This is not a book about death, but a book about the challenges we all face, and will face, as we make our way through this thing called life.
