Mother's Finest put out some of the best music that many never heard in the mid-to-late 70s. 2.0 out of 5 stars No Funk/Metal to be Found Here
2 1/2 = Fair

I came to know of Mother's Finest maybe 20 years ago, but forgot about them. It was several years ago on boards like this one that I heard of them again. As it is no secret I'm into funk/rock & funk/metal, people would tell me to check out Mother's Finest. I finally got around to buying this album 4-5 years back, after hearing how great it was &...

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic metal funk, November 8, 2001

Mother's Finest put out some of the best music that many never heard in the mid-to-late 70s. Based in the Atlanta area, their music is rock with a strong soul influence that was somewhat reminiscent of Sly and the Family Stone. But whereas the earlier band worked from a more traditional r&b instrumental base - horns, rhythm-oriented chugga chugga rhythm based guitar, gospel-tinged Hammond organ - MF was a hard rock band: slashing guitars with soaring leads and synthesizer-heavy keyboards. The best songs of MF are classics that never grow old. However, writing was never their strong suit. Whereas Sly & the Family Stone bridged their multi-racial audiences through an extended series of hit singles, MF's following never rose above cult status and their rousing live shows were mainly limited to the club circuit.

Another Mother Further is top heavy, with most of the best tracks in the first half, although none of it is bad by any means. If you are new to the band, start with Not Yer Mothers Funk, as it adds other great songs to *most* of the best ones from this CD. But Another Mother Further is a must-have for MF fans.

John (FunkRock GA, still there) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Another Mother Further (Audio CD)
I saw this band six times and every time I came out covered in sweat and exhausted. Sweet Baby Jean commanded an audience like I've seen no other do, "turn off the music, we don't need no damn music" as the crowd (stadium full) swayed to the chorus of "Give you all the love inside of me". The energy this band possessed is truly incredible. Buy this CD, you will burn it up. The live CD is also good and gives a view of their live show - From FunkRock Georgia, Mothers Finest! Please, please someone issue their first album on CD, self entitled Mothers Finest.

5.0 out of 5 stars WAAAAAAAAAAAAY Under rated!!!!!!, July 11, 2006

This funked up rock band was before it's time. This is truly tasteful funk at it's best. Joyce has the voice of a true Diva, more soul than today's modern day Divas. Anyone would agree that Joyce can shine just as bright sitting beside all the Arethas, the Gladyses and Tinas. MF is one brilliant mixture of attitude and talent. HOW they ever slid under the radar and missed all the billboard/award blah blah will forever be a mystery to me. Frankly they were short changed and robbed of one heck of a career ride.

5.0 out of 5 stars Waaay Ahead Of Their Time & Painfully Underrated!!, January 31, 2006
This review is from: Another Mother Further (Audio CD)
Man, southern rock / funk interracial hybrid
Mother's Finest was one of the
rockinist-funkiest-slamminest bands ever!

Coming out of Atlanta, GA (Doraville) with a sound all
their own, they were contemporaries with Funk / Rock
pioneers like early Funkadelic, Rufus featuring
Chaka Khan & The Isley Brothers as well as southern
rock icons like Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers,
The Doobie Brothers, etc., but they never-ever got
the love and repsect (sadly!) that they so
richly deserved!
This 1977 album was my first introduction
to them by a then teenaged cousin of mine
and over the next three albums:
This one, 1978's more R&B-influenced but still hot
"Mother Factor", which begat the classic hit
"Love Changes" (probably their most remembered!)
and the blistering "Mother's Finest LIVE" from 1979,
I became a definite fan!
The soulful and powerful vocals of lead singer
Joyce "Babyjean" Kennedy are right up there with
Chaka Khan's, Ann Wilson's and Pat Benetar's for
their penetrative powers!--Talk about underrated!
The band itself was funky and hard rockin' as hell
all at the same time, and their live show was high
energy at it's best!--I saw them in 1979 at age 15!

It's a shame that they aren't mentioned up there with
other 70's rock greats, but I'll be damned if they
don't deserve to be!
There are alot of closet MF fans around the world and
quite a few of their guitar and vocal licks have
found their way into many a rock and R&B
album over the years!
The gems of this album are "Baby Love",
"Truth'll Set You Free", "Thank You For The Love",
"Mickey's Monkey" (a rocked out version of the old Motown classic!)
and their funk / rocky answer to a then
pervading disco sound "Dis Go Dis Way"...
All-n-All a good gem for anyone who digs funky
southern 70's hard rock!---Buy It!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best 70's heavy metal bands, July 15, 2003
This review is from: Another Mother Further (Audio CD)
When I first bought this album, It was in '78. A friend and fellow hard rock fan had told me this was one of the best hard rock albums he had ever heard. I got it, listened, and it seemed like pure funk music to me. I wasn't interested and so I put it in the record cabinet and didn't pull it out for a few years. Later I was talking to someone about 70's hard rock, and he brought up this group. I went home and played the record again. I played it again and again until I was hooked. It is one of my favorite albums. It's funky and heavy. It is pure hard rock, but with a funk style that makes the band stand out well. It now has the same respect I reserved for my copies of "Machine Head", "Zeppelin IV", and "Highway to Hell". It's classic funk metal.

4.0 out of 5 stars big slab-o-funk rock, June 17, 2006
This review is from: Another Mother Further (Audio CD)
Mother's Finest's "Another Mother Further" made the rounds at my high school when I was just a wee lad in junior high, and it kicked everyone's butt who heard it. From the opening of "Mickey's Monkey" to "Hard Rock Lover" this album was in everyone's heavy rotation. The band, from an Atlanta suburb (my locality), applied a beautiful bone-shattering combination of bass-heavy funk grooves along with serious rock and roll guitars and gospel-tinged vocals mixed together in a bottom-end heavy production that still thumps hard today. "Baby Love" still makes first-time listeners pause or stop to listen a while, it's that good. Even today it's still sounds fresh because this type of high-quality funk/rock never goes completly out of style. Production values are clean and sound better the louder it goes. Earth Wind and Fire have nothing on these guys. They bring the funk and the rock and shove it in your face and down your narrow little throat.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic, July 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Another Mother Further (Audio CD)
This album finds the band Mother's Finest rockin and funkin in a way in which only they alone could pull it off. Even though there are just 8 tracks on the entire set, each one is a true creative gem, ranging from Led Zep-inspired rock (Mickey's Monkey, Hard Rock Lover) to electrically-charged funk (Baby Love, Truth'll Set You Free) to raw, impassioned soul (Thank You For the Love). There's even an experimental disco-tinged instrumental that successfully incorporates the best of both genres for an interesting groove experience. Overall, this album is filled with plenty of diversity, inspired singing, and top-notch musicianship. Add this one to your collection ASAP. This one's pretty much hard to find.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mother's Finest AMF, December 1, 2011
This review is from: Another Mother Further (Audio CD)
One of the best albums of the seventies by one of the best bands ever. Everything they do is great. They are the only band, in my humble opinion, that successfuly combined "Funk" and "Rock". There have been funky rock bands and rockin' funk bands but no one can touch these guys.
Why aren't they they the biggest band in the world and why aren't they in the RnR Hall Of Fame?
Just get it and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get Ready To Move, February 19, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Another Mother Further (Audio CD)
Mother's Finest is a band with a big heart, forward vision, and music that makes you want to move every part of your body. Founded in the 70s around Atlanta, they were unique as an interracial band combining the funky soul more associated with black performers and hard-rocking guitars more often seen with white acts. They transcended barriers and boundaries, took no prisoners and made music that was accessible to every neighborhood without being a sell-out. Another Mother Further is their masterpiece.

MF still tours today with founding members Joyce "Baby Jean" Kennedy and Glen Murdock. If you haven't yet, hit the sample button for "Piece of the Rock" or "Burnin' Love". Be ready to move yourself.
